We are Uk citizens. We have booked a European holiday for August this year. I noticed my son's passport runs out before then. Normally I would leave it until June sometime to renew. Should I do it before we leave/have no deal instead? Or won't it make much difference?

I dont think it would but i'd do it now anyway, they wll add on the leftover time.

DGRossetti · 09/01/2019 14:26

they wll add on the leftover time.

No they won't. That changed last year.

TheNumberfaker · 09/01/2019 16:35

They can’t add extra time because non-eu passports used to enter the EU are only valid for 10 years from the issue date. This isn’t an issue whilst we’re still a member.
I would get it now, as it could still be chaos in june.

1981m · 09/01/2019 18:05

Yes I was thinking it might be chaos in June. Are they thinking of changing the passports though? Will we have to apply for a new passport or can we just keep our old red ones until they run out? Don't want to pay for an 'old' looking one now and then have to reapply when they are changed.

Get it now. I don't think we are heading for no deal, but it would be stupid to rely on government services being unaffected by a no deal Brexit if it does happen. Plus this is the quiet time of year and the renewal will be quicker.

You won't have to change the passport after Brexit.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2019 21:51

The government are advising that there is 6 months left on passports for people travelling to the EU after brexit if we go no deal.

HerLadySheep · 09/01/2019 22:51

If we leave the EU then the passports will change but not until 2020 I believe, it's to do with the new contract for passport production. Which has been won by an EU firm

AnyFucker · 09/01/2019 22:54

2 things

  1. unused months are no longer "added on"

  2. if we leave the EU with no deal then you must have at least 6 months left on your passport to travel in Europe ( currently you can use it up to the last day)

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 09/01/2019 23:00

Having gone through the stress of “will DD’s passport arrive in time” when I cut it fine renewing it ahead of our family holiday last year, I would say definitely do it sooner rather than later. The stress just isn’t worth any “lost months”.

DGRossetti · 10/01/2019 07:35

1) unused months are no longer "added on"

But I bet it will be trotted out as "fact" many times in many threads after this ...

Maryjoyce · 10/01/2019 07:44

The unused months added to the new passport was stopped because we were the only country in the world to do so and it went against the civil aviation authority’s guidelines of no passport been more than 10 years in length and nothing to do with brexit as I’m sure lots will try to imply

Maryjoyce · 10/01/2019 07:49

And the 6 months is normal time to be left on any passport after you have travelled to any country outside Europe currently which will just make Europe the same that’s all.
Please remember it’s 6 months left on the passport after the trip not before

Peregrina · 10/01/2019 09:46

It is nothing to do with Brexit, but the way they made the change was sneaky - people only found out when their new passports came back without the extra months added. Since nearly everything Brexit related has been done sneakily, this made it look as though it was Brexit related.

springlike · 10/01/2019 09:53

You don't need 6 months for travelling to and from the US. Each country is different - look on the gov.uk websites for full info.

1981m · 10/01/2019 20:19

It runs out in April and we have booked to middle of July. If they aren't changing the passport system until 2020 then might as well wait until May/June to sort. I didn't want to leave it and it take forever because there's some crisis because they are changing the passports or if suddenly for some reason a surplus of people are applying for British passports

Thanks for this thread OP! DS’s passport expires in May and he’s going on a school trip in May.

www.gov.uk/guidance/passport-rules-for-travel-to-europe-after-brexit

Worth a look and check ahead for summer holiday travel. In the event of no deal you will have to have at least 6 months remaining on your passport from date of travel.

BackInTime · 11/01/2019 21:31
  • apologies it’s from date of arrival.

If the passport runs out in April and you don’t need it between now and when you next travel, I would get on with renewing.

Xenia · 11/01/2019 22:10

If there is no deal you will need 6 months unexpired which you already do for plenty of other countries internationally so I would get it renewed now.
This Autumn we renewed 3 - my 3 sons and they came back amazingly quickly - in about a week. Not peak time I suppose so that helped.

shpoot · 11/01/2019 23:25

They come back really quickly at the moment. I'd do it in May. I've got an even bigger predicament.

Ours run out in July, we want to holiday in April. But I don't want to lose 6 months by applying now. Would need to though if a no deal brexit.
