Hard Brexit?

So its looking more likely that a no deal hard Brexit will happen isn't it! Shit! How worried should we/ I be? What should I be stockpiling? I have a 1 year old who still likes formula and slowly taking to cows milk? Should I be stockpiling many months supply of formula or longlife whole milk? What things are you stockpiling? I have a small house so can only stockpile so much. Or am I overreacting?

omg YES babies were fed during WW2.

Inkspellme · 22/12/2018 12:31

Get a shovel. Quick. Start digging your bunker. Stash tinned food in it. Alarm it in case neighbors try to raid it. What on earth are you doing on mumsnet when you could be digging?

Quietrebel · 22/12/2018 14:08

gravel

What a ridiculous argument! Babies died during ww2. Many of them. I have no wish to experience a world war kind of situation! Incredible!

Quietrebel · 22/12/2018 14:10

OP forget the trolls.
Maybe do buy a few formula boxes just to be on the safe side if you can afford it. I don't expect the apocalypse but normal supplies will get disrupted in a no deal scenario. You are right to share your concerns.

nuttynutjob · 22/12/2018 14:11

Go to the Preppers board on Mumsnet or
Join the 48% Preppers on Facebook

Ignore the ones that mock. Better to be prepared than be caught in the clusterfuck of Brexshit

Quassia · 22/12/2018 14:14

I posted on the Travel forum -- I have the first two weeks of April off (happily coinciding school break) and am thinking of flying to New York with DH and DC to visit relatives we've not seen in decades.

Is this a crazy idea with hard Brexit looming ahead?

Quassia · 22/12/2018 14:17

Sorry to hijack, OP. Am also a bit worried.

I think slowly buy extra things you will eventually eat/use up. Check the use by dates of formula and long life milk. Also Calpol and meds.

Confusedbeetle · 22/12/2018 14:17

Good grief, get a life!

bellinisurge · 22/12/2018 14:20

Hi @NeedAGoodUsernameThatIsntTaken . I'm a regular on the Preppers topic There's lots of sensible non panicky budget friendly advice on there. If you have a specific question, better ask it there because this thread might descend into Brexit discussion including people taking the piss.
There are no tin foil hats on display on the topic. You don't have to "Become a Prepper ".
Best wishes.

Quassia
getting to NYC all depends on what agreements the Whitehall muppets have signed by then

bellinisurge · 22/12/2018 14:57

Ok, there's more on the Preppers Topic but for those that don't have the time or inclination to look, here's some basic advice. Plenty more useful budget friendly stuff on the Preppers topic.
Imagine three days snowed in. Imagine all you would need for breakfast dinner and tea (I'm Northern so it's dinner). Imagine what you need to keep clean (toothpaste, soap, bog roll etc) and entertained. Imagine what snacks and treats you'd like. Keep your phone charged up. Get into the habit of never letting your petrol tank get less than half full. Remember your pets. Get tea/coffee/wine/beer whatever.
Buy in bits and bobs accordingly. Buy food you actually eat. Tins mean you won't clog up your freezer. Mix of the two is an idea if tins aren't for you.
Focus only on what works for you and yours.

If you do no more you are already in a better position. If you want to do more, ask/lurk on Preppers Topic.

bellinisurge · 22/12/2018 14:59

Your aim is to keep things normal in your house if things get hairy at the supermarket. You can work out next steps (if needed) without worrying about getting basics at the shops.
No one wants to get in a fight over loo roll.

jasjas1973 · 22/12/2018 15:39

OP - you really shouldn't be listening to so called sensible folk like 'bell,

Instead try and arrange a wet nurse and/or start feeding your baby boiled cows milk and sugar, stock up on Carnation milk and skimmed milk powders, don't forget to switch off central heating, buy paraffin lamps/heaters and walk everywhere, some black out curtains will add to that authentic WW2 feeling.
Oh and pls forget about Calpol, use some crushed willow leaves, works every time.

We managed before and really don't need all these modcons.

jm90914 · 22/12/2018 15:53

I can't see why people are taking the piss. If it makes you feel better to have a back up, then do it - you can always eat the stuff anyway if it turns out you don't actually need it.

I've been wondering about my medication for a while, and I've been leaning on the "surely everything will be ok" side of things.

But I've just seen an NHS GP on Twitter saying that they're experiencing medicine shortages already (because of the stockpiling):

twitter.com/MarcPaton1/status/1076149679958691842

And he's been told to give patients the message that all will be fine (not something he appears to think himself):

twitter.com/MarcPaton1/status/1076172830495162369

Doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. Don't know what to think.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 22/12/2018 20:55

OP - you really shouldn't be listening to so called sensible folk like 'bell,

I think bellini comes out with very sensible advice

she is only talking about 3 days not some survivalist Armageddon which means we cant get to the shops for a decade

And people go loopy over Christmas and the petrol shortages!!

Garffy75 · 22/12/2018 23:28

Any one that thinks a hard brexit won't cripple our country has not been paying attention. Definitely stock up on a few bits, all stuff you would use like rice and baked beans. If you formula feed get some spare. We are likely to have hold ups at port and 40% of our food is imported. Oh and nappies! Get a few extra packs.
