125,000 pro-brexiters of average age 76 to decide next pm?

Beyond parody that the future of this country is likely to be in the hands of the Conservative party membership - 125,000 not very diverse people with strong views on policing and pulling yourselves up by your bootstraps, aged average 76, heavily pro brexit, experienced raffle ticket sellers, fete organisers and cake makers, likely to pick a nice young man like Dominic raab. And we pride ourselves on being a mature democracy. This is what hubris looks like.

My thoughts exactly. May was bad.....but I am now somewhat panicking even further at the alternatives.

Yes all parties choose their own leader. Whomwouid expect otherwise?

Confidence vote is this evening - it's not been won or lost yet, but we'll know by bedtime

I think the candidates have to get through a selection process by MPs first so is there a slim hope that the ERG nutters won't get enough support from them?

Ifailed · 12/12/2018 07:57

nothing stopping people joining the Tories.

Yes and you could look at the Labour Party members choice of leader - Corbyn - what a great leader of the opposition he's been.

Figmentofmyimagination · 12/12/2018 08:10

The Tories have never really needed lots of individual members because of size of the corporate and wealthy individual donations.

Indeed aside from the ERG, there is something of a cavernous gap between the views of the individual membership and the parliamentary party. This is their moment.

Ironic that brexit could result in the end of the most successful election fighting machine in the 20th C. In another irony, the only thing keeping them in office is the ineptness of the labour leader and their confidence to date that the uk would not elect him.

Corbyn - what a great leader of the opposition he's been.

He's awful. But any change in Labour leader isn't a change in Prime Minister, a choice that affects us all. For decades, considering what is currently happening.

Oh the irony of Brexit ...
To settle internal differences within the tory party.

  • So many issues put forwards as reasons for Brexit that could be done without Brexit ot that had nothing to do with Brexit.
  • Tory leader elected, even though she is anti-Brexit, because none of "big" pro-Brexit Tories would go for leader.
  • The Tories now holding on to power because of Labour ineptitude and mot being strong enough to call for motion of no confidence ... in case it goes through!
  • Fee Tories backing Tory leader, but nobody willing to remover her.... as nobody willing to take her role, even though they all spout how simple the solution is.
  • DUP back Brexit (to the extent of placing adverts in London newspapers) even thought it is seen by many from all sides in Northern Ireland as the "thing" that would lead to destabilising the union and bringing forward the time for a United Ireland referendum (and a second Scottish Independence referendum).
  • Sinn Fein opposing Brexit, even though it could bring forward the time for a United Ireland referendum.
  • proBrexit stalwarts like Jacob Reece-mogg who believe totally in Brexit and confident there will be nothing but a positive impact on uk... but still move business interests to Dublin or Europe.

Depressing... and interesting in equal measures!
