Getting dual citizenship for Germany?

My husband's father was German and we are thinking whether it would be worth him applying for dual citizenship? Has anybody done this and where would we even begin? Would it mean that I and our children could also gain citizenship? Sorry for being a bit vague but I'm genuinely not really sure where to start or if it will be worth pursuing!

I’m pretty sure German law doesn’t normally allow dual citizenship with countries outside the EU. It hasn’t been tested, but Brexit could mean you lose the citizenship.

Germany seems to be taking a (typically) pragmatic approach to Britons wanting dual citizenship and is offering them an extended chance to gain it. It should be fairly straightforward for your husband if your FIL was a German citizen - I'd start by looking at any information on the German consulate website and sorting out birth certificates etc.

It sounds like in your situation, your husband would in fact inherit it and not naturalise so it may well be allowed regardless of brexit.

He'd have to prove his father's nationality and they put him on the register.

Thankyou. The only issue is that his father has sadly passed away so we would have to work out how to get hold of his birth certificate etc, he's not actually sure where in Germany he was born so it may be interesting finding that out!
