In the interests of trying to figure out what may or may not happen come next April I thought it would be a good idea to see what all the different sectors currently have planned for Brexit.

To start, I'm a sahm, dh professional role in the forces (think vet, dentist, dr etc). So far he's heard nothing official from the powers that be about how, in a work capacity, he should prepare for Brexit. Typical 'keep calm and carry on' approach Hmm

I'm a researcher in a university.
I don't understand user's rant. That is what a Russian troll would write.
My employer had €millions of EU grants in recent years, STEM subjects. UK long attracted a bigger share of EU research grants than UK population suggested UK should get. Can't happen in future. :( We keep applying for grants from UK sources in last 2 years, but the criteria for awarding these is very biased in favour of the biggest Unis so the smaller research intense institutions (which did especially well out of EU funding streams) are now shafted. The EU-citizen PhD students (PhD students are supposed to be the engines of research, & there are many of them from EU) are feeling insecure.

I asked at work who was looking into this and told "no one". So now I'm in charge of it as I asked the question Hmm

We are likely to see a spike in demand but possibly less budget to do it. My team have been researching possible scenarios are gradually getting more worried.

Across our family there are a variety of views on Brexit but this is what’s actually happening.
I am a nurse in Primary Care. Have now had a couple of patients asking about medication and it’s supply post Brexit ( no deal) . No official guidance apart from these technical notices. I had a conversation with local councillor as want to know how medicines would be distributed in the event of shortages they have no information either. Also know 3 GP colleagues who are moving abroad.
My daughters boyfriend is French. They are currently in a dilemma. He works for a publication which relocates French National to U.K. and vice versa. They are closing the U.K. branch and have asked him to relocate to the Paris office. Dd has just got her dream job so doesn’t want to move particularly. Her bf has only been here just over a year so may not get settled status. They were thinking of trying for a long distance relationship for a while but if she doesn’t move by next March she’s not sure if she would be able to or if the travel to and fro will be problem free.
Other dd is considering moving abroad with her partner when he finishes his degree. They both have mountains of student debt and don’t see how they will achieve anything in the U.K. out of the eu.

I'm an academic in an area strongly linked to the NHS. We have already made the decision to cut one of our smaller programmes from next Sept, as the students are mainly EU nationals and applications have fallen through the floor.

Our bigger programmes may be less directly affected in terms of student numbers, although as the NHS becomes an even less inviting place to work, this could change.

However, inevitably research funding will be slashed. I am in on a grant application to one of my area's major funders who have just been in the news talking about how disastrous a no-deal Brexit will be for them and for other funding partnerships. We have lost brilliant EU colleagues already who have decided to return home.

Brexit is toxic. I am half-hoping that Scotland have another indyref and vote Yes this time. I'll be on the first train up there.

Theworldisfullofgs · 07/10/2018 16:49

I'm self employed. Following brexit vote some work dried up immediately as some projects were shelved. Fairly hefty chunk.
It slowly recovered for me but some colleagues shut up shop as it was another thing just as they were recovering from the recession. I'm expecting the same again.

I work in the public sector, in an organisation that will bear the brunt of any Brexit fallout. If you are in the UK, what we do affects each and everyone of you, every day. When I asked management about planning for Brexit I was met with bafflement and was told we have to be optimistic. Whole teams in our organisation are directly EU-funded. My job is probably safe.

BTW I wonder if the pp has any idea how much STEM research in the UK is funded by the EU? Hmm

DH is in teaching. I'm not currently working but I'm trying to figure out a way to become self-employed, due to disability. No idea what impact Brexit will have on my potential market. Probably it will not be viable. Bit shit really.

bellinisurge · 07/10/2018 17:58

My job is in the public sector (used to be in the private sector). I live in a massively pro-Leave area.
My plan is to keep my head down and keep prepping in secret.

Sashkin · 07/10/2018 18:33

NHS Doctor - just finished training, and there are no consultant jobs available due to Brexit/austerity (retired consultants not being replaced despite increase in patient numbers).

So I’ve moved to Canada, along with my IT professional DH. I’d like to come back, and am keeping my eye on job opportunities, but I’m not hopeful about the next couple of years.

DoraJar · 07/10/2018 18:50

Financial services - realised I was screwed so now work overseas

cucumbergin · 07/10/2018 19:15

IT professional. Putting off job change so that I'll still be eligible for redundancy if the company I work for goes to the wall. I notice that we've cut back on hiring plans so I'm expecting it may be rough. If it gets bad, DP & I can try moving abroad, but as more medically expensive middle aged folks that's likely to be harder post-Brexit and as a mixed-race family we cannot go just anywhere.

All the EU lecturers I know have a better command of English than user displays in his/her post.
