Can anyone explain the consequences of a Canada type deal that is being talked up now?

Dear Mumsnettters , coming to you very informed people.
Wouldn’t dream of trusting Hunt and all those other lying sods to give an honest answer.

My thoughts but not sure which is why I am asking for yours:

couldn’t be something to sort out in a short space of time. Didn’t that deal take something like 3 years.
If so it would need to be sorted in a transition period.
For that to happen we need to agree to abide by the withdrawal agreement
That would include the backstop for NI which is still a problem for May, most of her govt and her DUP cronies.

But can a Canada style trade deal work especially for the border?
And what does it do for the economy in the short and longer term?

A Canada-type deal means a hard border, so it would be the death knell for businesses that are integrated into European just in time supply chains, and probably the end of mass-market vehicle assembly in the UK.

It would need the Irish backstop ie NI remains in the CU and parts of the single market.

Based on history and some knowledge of how long it takes to ratify trade deals, i don't personally see how a Canada type FTA can be concluded and in place before the end of the transition period (Dec 2020), if there is indeed a transition period at all - but I'm not a trade deal specialist.

How long did it take Canada to get its trade deal?

I forget who on here mentions it but Greenland, (?) with a population of about 50,000 set up a trade deal about fishing ONLY and it took 3 years.
Car manufacture is infinitely more complicated.

I think it took 10 years for Canada to get its trade deal. I am not sure whether that was 7 years or so to get the detail worked out and another three to ratify it, but I think that was it.

So to think we will get a trade deal with Canada in 6 months is pie in the sky. Unless of course, the Brexiters think we can just cut and paste the EU/Canada deal, which I am pretty sure is what they do think. They ought to have heard by now countries like New Zealand telling them that they won't be cutting and pasting any deals. But Brexiters don't listen.
