Brexit

Anyone outside of UK and waiting for Brexit fallout to return?

We've recently left the UK, due to personal reasons it was now or not for a while until the dust had settled after Brexit.

We are early days out and happy enough, but I have a feeling we'll be pulled back at some point for work (or maybe not, dh is in the financial sector), maybe it will be elsewhere in the EU.

Just wondering about others and their plans etc.

Not me. I'm in Australia. We left three years ago and don't plan to return to live.

I'm still in the UK. Last night I was up until nearly midnight packing up the kids' toys and stuff. Return to the UK voluntarily after Brexit? Certainly not without a French passport if I'm ever eligible for one, and probably not even then.

Moved back to Ireland as soon as article 50 was triggered and so glad we did. We have much better jobs here, are appreciated more, and not subject to casual racism. And it only seems to have gotten crazier in the UK, trying to blame the EU and Ireland for their decision.

RollerJed · 22/09/2018 06:41

@AjasLipstick we are now in Aus too. Seem so far away from it all but dh is Irish and I'm worried for Ireland too with this.

We've moved most of our money but still have some there plus pension. TM's speech yesterday was a fucking shambles for the pound 🙄

It's the last nail in the coffin of me ever going back. Very sad as I always thought I would. Part of me wonders if we will need to send food packages to my parents like Aussie relatives used to decades ago!

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 23/09/2018 13:09

Moved to France a year ago. I'm staying at least until I've got citizenship (so at least 5 years) and will not move my family to the UK if it is a basket case, so we will watch and wait to see what happens.

Jed I feel safer here somehow. It's not perfect...we don't earn loads but I just feel a bit less afraid than I did in the UK. I LOVE the UK too...so much of it is wonderful but our lifestyle there was hard.

RollerJed · 23/09/2018 13:39

@MrsTerryPratchett Shock Am happy though to send food parcels to friends if needed.

I’ve taken a one year research job in Canada, due to finish next August - I’m seriously considering extending this to give things more of a chance to settle down. I don’t really want to come back into the middle of a recession.

Not in UK at the moment but will return soon. plan is to live in UK for 6 to 7 months of the year and then 5 months away.

it's so nice to be away and just not hear any Brexit talk at all, no casual racism, no hard right wing government rhetoric. Nobody here is interested. It's not a conversation.

I can cope with UK and Brexit since I'll be out of it all for several months each year, with permanent move possible in the future

Movablefeast · 27/09/2018 05:21

We are in the USA and we are open to possibly retiring in Europe or the UK but waiting to see what happens before we invest ...

I have relatives and friends overseas who emigrated several years ago. They are unlikely ever to return but that's nothing to do with Brexit. They just prefer living where they do. They love the higher standard of living, better healthcare (and life expectancy) general positivity, space, and freedom. we always love visiting them and when we come home we wish the UK had the same get up and go mentality and that half the country didn't hate the other half, or itself. The UK has got so weird over the last few decades. It's really not that outstanding a place anymore in terms of what it offers it's citizens. many countries have objectively moved ahead of us in so many areas. Our decline relative to many countries of the world and particularly the widening disparities of wealth within our own country is pretty damn depressing and you notice it when you come back from spending some time abroad. it's plain to see the cracks behind the window dressing and the smart supermarket packaging (that the uk does admittedly well) . Spend time in Oz or the States or even parts of Asia and then come back to the UK. Everyone looks fucking miserable in comparison and "beaten down" - it is pretty much the first observation. It also seems quite dirty and overcrowded in comparison to many places. Why would folks ever want to return to live here? Hopefully Brexit can solve some of that but as much of the uks issues stem from the attitude of its citizens, not brexit as such, who knows?

squifflybobs · 27/09/2018 08:17

I'm in NZ and was thinking about moving back pre-brexit referendum - but am staying put for now until things settle down.

I have a pension (final salary so difficult to move) and flat in the UK . I figure if the pound plummets and never recovers, I will just have to split my time between UK and NZ once I retire, which is at least 15 years away. I'm very actively saving and investing for retirement here though!

My kids are now nearing secondary school age, so unless things go very smoothly I think it's unlikely we will come back now before they leave school.

We miss our families but not willing to risk coming back into a terrible recession.

Natsku · 27/09/2018 08:40

Not ever returning to the UK but to be fair I already decided that before Brexit, Brexit just cements my decision. It does mean though that I'm thinking I should get British passports for the children to make visits easier.
