Hopefully it won't happen. Scary stuff.

Don't worry Stealth, the govt will give them some of the £350m a week we're going to have spare and all will be fine. There will be a few arrests and they'll go to a fit for purpose prison where they will be rehabilitated and on release will be good upstanding citizens.

Either that or the already underfunded police will have all their leave cancelled and continue to fight a losing battle. Those that go to prison will be drawn even deeper into a life of crime and drugs because there's sod all support to change, perhaps we'll have a few more suicides (sorry, self inflicted deaths) as well.

You're right, it is scary.

SilkeOvesen · 09/09/2018 10:10

TBH I think that’s a good thing; we all know it’s a possibility so it’s better that they are prepared for it. If it doesn’t happen, which is hopefully the case, then it’s not a problem.

StealthPolarBear · 09/09/2018 10:16

Yes true I am pleased they are preparing but just shocking this is the outcome of the will of the people.

OP posts:
SilkeOvesen · 09/09/2018 10:23

Definitely!

I suppose I’m not that surprised as I saw it coming a while back, frankly nothing would surprise me any more! Between Trump, Russia and the UK political situation I don’t get shocked too easily these days Grin

Obviously that doesn’t change the extreme gravity of the whole affair.

StealthPolarBear · 09/09/2018 10:40

I said I thought there would be riots but as with this and the stockpiling of food and medicines, we were overreacting

OP posts:

They already have plans, this is just a 'fundraiser'. All the major services have plans.
Mind you the plans they have 'cost' nothing in themselves, it is persons and equipment that are lacking. Thus you leak a few lines and pressurise the treasury to put some money to it.
The whole Brexit scenario is just a hideous pantomime and little bits get 'leaked' just to keep the UK and world in suspense.
'He's behind you'!
Not saying it isn't scary though.

StealthPolarBear · 09/09/2018 11:31

Yes I see what you mean. I'm sick of this, just want to wake up next April and see how bad it is.

OP posts:
1tisILeClerc · 09/09/2018 11:45

I wonder how many times over that 'fictional' £350 Million has been spent in preparation(?) for Brexit?
So that's the police, Army, Ports, Roads, Customs, HMRC, Money for critical medicines, that have all increased or will increase.

RedneckStumpy · 09/09/2018 11:51

The police force have like, 6 officers and a dog. They are going to be vastly outnumbered. Unfortunately for them it’s a loosing battle. The UK could become lawless for a few days.

woman11017 · 09/09/2018 11:53

The UK could become lawless for a few days
Lucky that the vast majority of the country is peaceful democratic and pro EU, then. Smile

1tisILeClerc · 09/09/2018 12:01

I read this morning that the British Army are staying in Germany. I don't blame them. Besides, they are trained to kill people, not stopping riots in Tescos.

1tisILeClerc · 09/09/2018 12:02

Mind you, having a couple of soldiers carrying arms 'patrolling' the supermarkets now would certainly 'up the ante'.

Hazardswan · 09/09/2018 12:11

I knew this whole thing was a shit storm but the way it's detailed here is disturbing. Army intervention due to concerns over medicine shortages, anyone?

1tisILeClerc · 09/09/2018 12:45

Getting the Army involved in things like logistics removes any issue of 'strikes' as they are governed by a different set of rules compared to everyone else, even the police, although I don't know which would take precedent. I think a full 'state of emergency' would have to be called.
The Army would have 'right' to fuel for example in case there was disruption. The UK SHOULD have 3 months supply of fuel oils anyway as part of usual 'problem' planning. Each country in the EU is supposed to have 3 months minimum stock, although a bit of 'physical' positioning was in place as some is actually stored in other countries but 'earmarked' elsewhere. Of course the usual storage was for 'natural' short lived problems so for Brexit the physical positioning has been reappraised. I forget the details but some of the UK oil stock was physically in Ireland IIRC.
Clicking off stories that have been linked on Westminsterenders thread can take you whole worlds you never were aware of and gives you an even greater sense of how totally stupid the whole Brexit farce is.

1tisILeClerc · 09/09/2018 12:52

Talking about fuel oil. End of March the UK will still be cold and dark. Consider where fuel oil, electricity and gas come from. Electricity from France. I believe about 10 percent.
Renegotiating deals for oil and gas. Could mean power cuts or rationing, depending on how well negotiations progress. The UK is on the back foot, prices will probably rise.

AdoraBell · 09/09/2018 12:59

The British Army are trained for more than simply killing people.

1tisILeClerc · 09/09/2018 13:18

Of course but containing civil disturbance is not their usual habitat.
Britain, unlike many other countries in the world does not usually have soldiers patrolling the streets.

Hazardswan · 09/09/2018 13:23

Hmm it was 'thanks' to British soldiers that an all women's villiage started in Africa apologies can't remember the country

So yeah the army isnt just trained for killing...

1tisILeClerc · 09/09/2018 13:50

If an army needs to be visible on the streets it suggests things are not as peaceful and stable as they should be.
This is however diverting a long way from Brexit, I certainly hope.

AdoraBell · 09/09/2018 14:33

I don’t have a problem with looking at recent history.

Also, I don’t believe that the British Army is perfect. Neither are the police forces, politicians, Drs, nurses, charity workers, teachers, scout leaders or any other organisation with people in positions of trust.

And yes, we are one of the countries that doesn’t routinely have soldiers on the streets.

The fact remains that the Army can do many things and to say that they are trained to kill people, not stop riots in Tesco isn’t helpful.

1tisILeClerc · 09/09/2018 15:09

@Adora
You are taking quite an aggressive stance over a very generalised statement that I made.
The fact that the government are even contemplating these moves suggests things are going pretty badly wrong.
It seems that the 'leave' party have no real clue about how integrated the UK is with the EU and the 'simply walk away' statements that are still being bandied about leaves a gap where about 7-10 years worth of unpicking 45 years of legislation needs to be resolved.

RedneckStumpy · 09/09/2018 15:11

The army are not really trained to take hostages, so there response tends to be a little more violent that a police response. But that’s to be expected and anticipated.

BeardedMum · 09/09/2018 15:13

Its frightening how this government is leading the country over the cliff edge because “the will of the people”. History will judge current politicians pretty badly.

Quietrebel · 09/09/2018 15:22

I think quite simply the people have to make clear what it is they want. Public opinion is evolving but it's very slow and not yet the landslide it would need to be in order for A50 to be revoked.

bellinisurge · 09/09/2018 16:51

Keep your head down and be a secret prepper. Like I am.
