Chance to retain EU citizenship after Brexit?

Let's hope they pull back but in the meantime there's this backstop approach to some of the many grave problems caused by our leaving the EU. This link explains it better than I did on the Westminstenders thread - www.theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/european-citizens-initiative-petition-on-eu-citizenship-after-brexit-1-5620660

“An ECI [European Citizens’ Initiative] allows EU citizens to challenge the Commission in areas where it can legislate. It requires one million signatures from at least seven of 28 member states for a petition to be considered.

Although not a binding agreement, it could lead to legislation to ensure British citizens are given EU citizenship after Brexit. This would grant specific rights to citizens such as the right to travel and live anywhere in the EU, and vote and stand in specific European elections.”

To support the initiative go to eci.ec.europa.eu/002/public/#/initiative

So the idea is that the EU to give individual British citizens all the rights and benefits of the EU while we as a country make zero contribution?

I can't see them going for this somehow.

grasspigeons · 24/08/2018 10:01

I cant see them going for it either but i'd like to keep eu citizenship

Bodoni · 24/08/2018 10:04

I guess there would be an individual fee involved. There would have to be, unless official bodies sponsored people who wanted to take it up. Would take ages to roll out if it was approved, but it's come to grasping at straws really.

Isn’t this the Associate membership idea championed by Guy Verhofstadt? Individuals pay for EU Associate membership iirc

1tisILeClerc · 24/08/2018 10:38

I have signed, just hope it makes a difference.
I don't see why there would be a lot of opposition by the various EU countries when you consider the likes of Germany taking in thousands of migrants with no 'history' whereas most inter EU migration is related to work and are either self supporting (retired) or actively employed, thereby contributing to the host country.

I've just had this email from them:

A flying start!

Permanent European Union Citizenship opened for endorsements at 3pm on 22/08/2018 and has been accumulating roughly 1,000 endorsements an hour. Our total now stands at over 42,000 and has representation from across the 28 EU Member States. It is clear that very many people are determined to protect the status, rights and protections conferred by European Union Citizenship and are unhappy about the prospect of such rights being stripped away.

More work to do!

It looks likely that we will break through the UK threshold in fairly short order. The threshold stands at 54,750 endorsements and we are currently over 60% towards this target. We need your help to reach the target as quickly as possible. At the same time, we are keen to build on the excellent responses to date from Ireland, Netherlands and Belgium. If you have access to networks, campaigns or individuals in any of these Member States, please get in touch with them and encourage them to share information about this ECI.

Brexpats Hear Our Voice

Our friends at Brexpats Hear Our Voice have put together an alternative list for those unable to sign the ECI. Rules for verifying endorsements vary from state to state and in some cases present a barrier. For more information and to sign up to the alternative list, please follow this link.

Join the #PermanentEUCitizenship Twitter Storm

We are asking our supporters to join a 'Twitter storm' between 7pm - 8pm on Sunday 26 August to promote the ECI. Please click here to register your participation and for more information.

Support our work

We hope to launch a more professional social media campaign in the coming weeks. This will help us to spread our message further by ensuring that people see our posts on Facebook and Twitter, for example. Our supporters have been extremely generous to date but we're asking anyone who hasn't yet donated to do so. So far, we have been collecting donations via PayPal but are now working on a 'crowdfunding' campaign. Please donate via paypal.me/eucitizen2017

Many thanks!

Yes it is. I am not sure how much per capita we pay into the EU each year (is it around £240?) but would happily pay depending on the level of fee to keep my EU citizenship and more particularly my son's.

Personally I think if you were born in the UK between 1973 and March 2019 you should stay an EU citizen anyway. Wouldn't help me, just a bit too old but again would help my son.

bellinisurge · 24/08/2018 18:43

My late mother was Irish (born there too). I'd love to see some scheme whereby British citizens can reclaim EU citizenship. Until then, thanks to Mum, I'm also an Irish citizen and can claim the same for dd.

ThinkOfAWittyNameLater · 24/08/2018 19:03

Signed.

As pp said, not just for my interest but for my kids.

Ta1kinpeace · 24/08/2018 19:05

Its utter pie in the sky.
Cute but pointless.
Having EU citizenship while stuck living in a post Brexit UK is worth diddly squat.

I have US citizenship. It does not mean I get Californian weather.

Yaralie · 24/08/2018 19:20

No Californian weather but the right to move to California

Ta1kinpeace · 24/08/2018 19:26

Not much cop if family, friends and work are here ....

I'm a CPA but I qualified under UK law, not US
DH is a lecturer but he qualified under UK law not US
(we are both self employed)

admittedly I'd move to Santa Cruz at the drop of a hat, but he's a Brit .....

So my Blue Passport is rather meaningless in the big scheme of things

ThinkOfAWittyNameLater · 25/08/2018 06:59

If I had a link to another EU country that allowed me to apply for another passport I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Yes, I'm British. Yes, I currently intend to stay living in this country but the way it's going means I want options for my family.

Maybe it is pie in the sky, but if it isn't I want a piece of it.

StitchingMoss · 25/08/2018 07:04

Agree, Think, I want to protect the future for my kids. One of my friend’s dh’s votes Leave but is now busy applying for Irish citizenship for his kids to protect their EU rights Angry.

Surely it would require the UK to recognise this new tier of citizenship and any EU rights that may be lost if one was to stay in the UK?

Worth supporting as a signature costs nothing but as Talk said, pie in sky.

I have an Irish Grandmother...pull that ladder up lol!

Bodoni · 25/08/2018 09:29

A 2016 piece in the Independent says: "The proposal could potentially give Brits who live and work across borders a workaround to the disruption caused by the Leave vote – and young people looking to flee an increasingly isolated UK greater choice over where to move to.

Depending on the approach taken by EU negotiators, the idea would likely be subject to approval by the British Government."

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-eu-citizenship-keep-freedom-of-movement-guy-verhofstadt-chief-negotiator-opt-in-passports-a7465271.html

The government would in effect forbidding young people to leave the country for work if they withheld approval. Oh for an effective opposition ...
