What would you buy ready for Brexit food shortages - just in case.

Been reading about possible food shortages if there's a hard Brexi and several work colleagues are apparently planning to stock up in advance of March 2019.

So what if anything would you stock up on? So my thoughts are:

Tea & coffee
Breakfast cereals
Long life milk
Tinned fruit & vegetables
Dried fruit
Frozen meat
Rice & pasta
Sugar
Soup
Pasta/curry sauces
Washing powder
Toilet rolls

I won't buy anything we wouldn't eat, and only plan to have a few of each just until normal supplies can be reinstated.

Oh please HmmConfused

StripeyMonkey1 · 30/07/2018 23:05

It will only happen if the government refuses to compromise.... and that would be crazy! No deal is... no food and army on the streets. Bonkers.

I'm betting that no government (yes, even our current slightly deranged one) won't go this far. But I might get a few extra tins of food in just in case.

flopsyrabbit1 · 30/07/2018 23:06

Biscuits
Crackers

JuniperBeer · 30/07/2018 23:07

There’s a whole bloody topic dedicated to this. Please use it. Preppers

TheMonkeyMummy · 30/07/2018 23:08

Floor, salt. Pasteurized milk. Tinned fruit and veg

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 30/07/2018 23:08

Olive oil, butter, flour, medicines, water

UkulelesAndFirepits · 30/07/2018 23:08

Is this a bit like Richard Madeley's Millenium Cupboard? Because that wasn't necessary either.

StripeyMonkey1 · 30/07/2018 23:10

Yep, I don't reckon the UK government is going for no deal either.

But so long as they threaten it, their bluff might be called, and I think we are naive not to deal with that possibility.

MrsAidanTurner · 30/07/2018 23:15

Loo roll, paracetamol, pasta, tea... Tins of tuna, baked beans etc. Just a few extra with every shop.

flopsyrabbit1 · 30/07/2018 23:20

I started mine today,coffee mate,batterries,soup

BigStripeyBastard · 30/07/2018 23:23

Cheese and hovis super thick for the freezer. I will ride out Brexit in toasted sandwich heaven.
Ok, cheese, hovis and wine. Lots of wine.

hmmwhatatodo · 30/07/2018 23:26

Gummy bears.

MrsAidanTurner · 31/07/2018 00:54

Batteries that's a good one but no point stock piling what we can get in UK

Witchend · 31/07/2018 00:57

Cola
Chocolate
Crisps
Tinfoil

The essentials. I keep a supply down my nuclear bunker along with the tinfoil in case I need a helmet.

EthelHornsby · 31/07/2018 01:08

Gin
Baked beans
Cat food

ImNotAsGreenasImCabbageLooking · 31/07/2018 01:17

As well as your list:

Cooking oils
Hot chocolate
Tinned fish/meat (if you eat them)
Tinned beans/lentils
Crackers
Crisps, nuts, popcorn
Cereal bars
Wraps (tend to have months to best before date)
Bottled water
Soft drinks/cartons of juice

Also stuff like toothpaste, loo roll, candles, batteries. Oh and wine! Plenty of wine Smile.

FWIW I don't really think it's going to come to no deal but given the rhetoric from the UK government I'd make sure to have stuff in to be on the safe side.

ImNotAsGreenasImCabbageLooking · 31/07/2018 01:20

Oh also some spices/packet mixes to liven up all the tinned stuff!

SausageTree · 31/07/2018 01:42

Oh, please get a grip. We are more than capable of surviving with what we have already.

Kezzie200 · 31/07/2018 04:18

No we arent! Look at snow days!

We run just in time systems so theres not much slack. Once people panic, stuff will be gone and it will be the vulnerable that will suffer. No savings to stock up or energy or room to shop like this.

I hope it wont come to this but it could because it does when the supply chain is delayed.

ItsalmostSummer · 31/07/2018 05:30

Id stock up my knitting needles (and wool), a few good books, probably a bikini, chocolate, and I’d buy a plane ticket Grin are we talking about a holiday in the sun?

AnyaMumsnet · 31/07/2018 09:38

Hi there everyone,

We think this thread should be moved over to the Brexit topic, so we'll be moving it across shortly.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 31/07/2018 09:46

Loo roll
Tins of tomatoes
Ginger/Garlic purée
Sanpro
Toothpaste
Soap
Pasta
Rice
Paracetamol/ibroprufen/piriton/etc
Anything you think you’d need if you were snowed in for a couple of days.
Ever since we were stuck in snow on the motorway a few years I always take food & blankets out in the car. I’m treating Brexit like that. If I don’t use it in the immediate aftermath it’ll still get used.
After the snow this year I realised I’m pretty unprepared for anything interrupting food supplies, so I’ve started making sure I’ve got enough stuff we’ll eat/use in the house!

flopsyrabbit1 · 31/07/2018 13:16

mine is a snow cupboard as well

ive just ordered m logs for the fire but im normally lowish by April so will be looking for a second delivery Feb time

i had to buy batterries as the thought of running out and non for the xbox controller would of sent me over the edge

cloudtree · 31/07/2018 14:17

It amazes me that there is still so much middle class complacency out there. Things could go wrong. It's really easy to add a few extra tins of food etc to the cupboard. Why wouldn't you? Its just an insurance policy and if they're not needed then they can be used or donated to a food bank.

RedneckStumpy · 31/07/2018 14:19

Dried food and canned goods. Therefore if you loose power you haven’t lost food.
