Brexit

Are you doing anything to prepare for Brexit?

It’s looking more and more likely that we will crash out without a deal. The government has stepped up no deal planning.

My question is, are you doing anything personally to prepare for leaving?

I am:

  • looking for jobs in companies that have businesses outside of the EU/exploring working abroad
  • paying down my mortgage as much as possible
  • not entering any new debt agreements eg credit cards

I hope we will all see sense. When even JRM says we will only see the upside of Brexit in 50 years you know we are fucked.

I'm hiding under my bed until it's safe to come out Smile

I'm starting a training course in September. A couple of years earlier then planned but I don't think there will be funding for it if the economy tanks.

Holding of on DC2 until after course, partially to fit round studying and partially to see how bad things get before deciding if we can afford another.

Storing 4 week's worth of food. I don't think it will get to the point of no food in shops but I'm anticipating limited choice, high prices, and only been able to buy a day or so's at once. I don't think stocking up will save our lives, but might save stress, time and money.

just sticking my head in the sand really... just dont want to get super depressed and anxious.
I did what I could... I voted and campaigned.... I leafleted and spoke to people....
I really dont know whats going to happen now...
I do think things will get harder for us and as we already live pretty much hand to mouth it could get quite ropy. Im sure we will survive its just that its going to be depressing.
Generations have been through worse than this, thats what I keep telling myself. I just hope things improve for when my children are adults.
Im just trying to keep positive and think about all the things that we do have.
Ive actually scraped by before in my life and been homeless so I know that actually the thing thats the killer more than anything else is the depression. Its hard when you are broke and I expect we will be pretty broke as I expect fuel and food bills will go up at least a tiny amount... which would effect us as we struggle anyway.. we dont own a home and we dont have any savings.
Another issue is that my family is spread across Europe... I worry about my elderly parents who are expats they dont seem to have any plan

I have a question. Can you extend the fixed term on your mortgage if it’s not due to expire any time soon?

FridayThirteenth · 03/08/2018 09:59

@DuggeeHugg the only way would probably be to remortgage and pay the early exit charge on your current mortgage. You can't usually make any changes to the rate until you are 3 months or less to the end of the fixed term.

I got an Irish passport when mine was due for renewal.

We're wanting to move house, but scared of a price crash and ending up in negative equity, so we're waiting to see how things go.

I plan to get some extra non-perishable food in, just in case there's a hiccup in the supply chain (I'm not envisioning a famine, but I do think there could be some blips, and I'd rather be prepared).

May move money into foreign currencies, though I'm not quite sure why, and I don't really think I have enough money for it to make much difference.

golondrina · 03/08/2018 14:52

As a Brit in the EU, I've applied for citizenship here, but it takes years (applied 18 months ago and still not even being processed) so I've got my Irish passport sorted. DH is from here and DCs born here, so it's just me. No assets or money in the UK now anyway.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 03/08/2018 14:53

As well as storing some food for us, I’ve increased our food bank donations (one for my stockpile, one for the food bank) as brexit will really affect those who cannot weather the food price increases.

Might bung a few cans in a cupboard in case Waitrose gets inundated with prepers...

SoloD · 03/08/2018 22:20

I have tried to find out about if we will need to pay duty when we export items to Turkey, Israel etc because when we leave there won't be a free trade agreement in place. Also how it will affect our tradeshows in Europe.

Tried the UK Embassies and the Department for International Trade. So far nothing back. Really helpful Not.

runningkeenster · 07/08/2018 17:10

I am beginning to stockpile a few "luxury" goods that may not be available after Brexit (even if made here their ingredients might not be available) eg moisturisers I like.

I will also stockpile some tinned fruit and the like so we don't get scurvy if we can't get fresh food for a bit.

I like the idea of moving capital out of the UK. Maybe buying gold is another option.

I'm not booking any holidays outside the UK until March 30th.

That's the extent of it.
