Do we need a coillition government until we are through with Brexit

Do we need to have a coalition government ( a national unity government), until we can work our way through the Brexit process? A coalition government can be created in times of extreme crisis, such as war or extreme economic crisis. Is the party system intensifying the problems and would the situation be helped if that was removed?

I can’t see it working because the cabinet and the Labour front bench are equally fecking useless (wrt Brexit at least). If it was a true cross party alliance covering a spectrum of views it might work, but I suspect we’d be lumbered with the current shower.

So instead of une bunch of useless politicians we get three bunches of useless politicians all pulling their way?

I don’t know. I think it’s a good idea, in general but I fear the practical execution.

Believeitornot · 25/07/2018 08:20

It is a good idea because it takes party politics out of it. That is why we have a problem with Brexit because Theresa May is bowing to the likes of the Tory right.

Who are only interested in getting rich out of Brexit. That’s why Aaron Banks, Nigel farage and Jacob Rees Mogg want Brexit. They want to make money. They’re already making money from playing the financial market and want to continue to do so.

I think that, in principle, it’s a good idea but I can’t see it happening. Whilst I’m appalled at May, BJ, Gove, JRM, Redwood, Farage etc, I don’t have much faith in Labour either. In some ways, I have been more shocked by their behaviour than the Tories because they are simply acting out of naked ambition or to save their own skin which doesn’t really surprise me.
I would love to see the NHS and Education taken out of party politics and dealt with by a cross party group who know what they’re doing and can properly plan ahead without having to worry about constantly having an eye on the next election.
They’re too important to be used as political footballs and taking them out of party politics would get rid of this constant short termism.
I grew up in the 70’s and do remember that there did seem to be a general respect for politicians even if you didn’t agree with them. That has completely evaporated now and they are generally regarded as being in it for their own ambition/personal gain rather than the good of the country.

No. This shit belongs to the Tories. They have been squabbling for 25 years over europe. Let the country see what a mess this has caused.

The Tories have had that shadow of anti EU for a long, long time, but right now, the labour voters are what fueled a lot of the problem with anti immigration "they stole my job" votes. The third party, the Libs don't have a vote in the their present form and no party right now will take the chance of standing up and saying, "hey, it looks like we are driving towards catastrophe, and maybe we need to think". That could only be done now by a cross party group. I think May, once she was outside of the Tory strangle hold, would take her more natural stance as a remainer too. I never liked may when she was just in the cabinet, but now, I feel she's pretty strong, trying to hold something together that is pretty terrible, but what she promised to do.

While there might have been a grain of truth in the UK leaving the EU, say 20 years ago, and if it had been done with proper planning that possibility has basically gone.
The increased activities of Russia, the 'unstable' President of the USA and the 'creation' of ISIS have made the concept of the UK being a 'glorious global player' have evaporated.
NOW is the time to say to the EU that we should stay in, perhaps actually engaging MORE in the aims of the EU.
Free voting and someone with a workable plan that enhances the lives of the people of the UK would be a good start. Don't hold your breath.

I could weep, the Tories are a mess, Labour are worse See the Twitter account of Margaret Hodge we are screwed.

inthemixx · 25/07/2018 10:27

54321go, I agree, it's just that there's no one with the guts AND credibility AND status that is willing to stand up and say we need to stay in the EU, because both main parties are following the line that they need to go along with the 'will of the people', those 17 million, out of the 65 million, that it is. That's why I am thinking of a cross party coalition.
I hear talk of a new party in the making, but it's being denied all round, but that could be the group to stand up and make the sensible claim to stop what we are doing.
