India wants to sell us sub standard produce in trade deal

theecologist.org/2018/jul/17/uk-india-trade-review-calls-flexibility-food-standards-and-chemical-rules

“The EU’s limits on the amount of chemical residue found in food products is clearly a source of aggravation to Indian businesses, who describe complications complying with rules on a range of exports:

Trace amounts of of fungicide in basmati rice
Growth retarding chemicals in grapes
Aflatoxins in chillies and spices
Antibiotics in fish products
Food hygiene standards at processing plants involved in milk products such as paneer”

Hopefully we will remain aligned to EU standards and refuse to compromise on this for the sake of a trade deal!

Not going to happen. We will be a tiny country with no support, we will have no negotiating power and will need to take what we are offered in any trade deal.

FrancinePefko42 · 21/07/2018 00:17

OP what you've said here is on a par with Alan Sugar's prejudiced views assuming that all young black loo alike/ sell counterfeit products on the beach.

You're a racist.

FrancinePefko42 · 21/07/2018 00:19

*black men look alike

HollyGibney · 21/07/2018 00:22

You're a racist.

For linking to an actual article, quoting from it and attempting to discuss it?! What exactly is racist about it and can you give some thoughts on how this article and its content can be discussed in a way that isn't racist?

RainSim · 21/07/2018 00:23

I am Indian and I am very concerned about this. Hygiene is very poor in India. Culturally hygiene has never been our strong forte. Even now, I dread going to India as I know I will catch food poisoning.

FrancinePefko42 · 21/07/2018 00:29

Yes racist because you are using a biased article to pander to fear and prejudices

HollyGibney · 21/07/2018 00:31

You are ridiculous.

FrancinePefko42 · 21/07/2018 00:35

That's is about as reasoned and well argued as the linked article and the sensationalist title of this thread.

The fact is we have been importing food from India for almost three centuries. Those who have even a rudimentary grasp of history will be aware that trade in spices with India laid the foundations of the British Raj.

FrancinePefko42 · 21/07/2018 00:49

Your precious EU was totally powerless and ineffectual in preventing French horsemeat (which was actually below required standards of quality and hygiene to be used as dog food), made into a ready meals in the UK passed of as prime minced beef and lamb.

Get your own house in order before spreading spurious rumours about a country that you KNOW will be dog whistle issue to foment fear and unspoken racist views which are now gaining traction and popular support right across Europe.

Shame on you,

HollyGibney · 21/07/2018 00:49

It's almost 1 am, I've been wrangling an autistic child for the last four hours. I can't be bothered to form an argument and frankly what would be the point? To immediately call someone a racist without even attempting to explore their reasoning, depth of knowledge or concern regarding the subject matter does indeed make you look ridiculous.

FrancinePefko42 · 21/07/2018 00:53

That has got to be the quickest switch from thinly veiled racism to playing the victim (Poor me, I'm so tired) card.

blaaake · 21/07/2018 00:54

Get a fucking grip @FrancinePefko42 or better, get off the thread if you're just going to make personal attacks for no apparent reason Confused

FrancinePefko42 · 21/07/2018 00:58

But it's perfectly OK for the Remain lobby to malign an entire nation.

We have been importing rice, spices etc etc for long before the EU even existed. We will continue to do so long after it falls apart.

blaaake · 21/07/2018 01:04

Nobody's complaining about imports from india, were complaining that there could be imports of much lower quality and hygiene without the restrictions the eu imposes

Heaven forbid that you should ever be exposed to a countervailing view. Wouldn't want to interrupt the circle jerk that is the Remain lobby.

This is insane! I have no problem buying Indian produce that meets current required standards or from any other country for that matter. It was quite clearly stated that India are unhappy about the rules imposed on imports into the EU, the suggestion being this could be used as an opportunity to relax the restrictions with the UK post Brexit.

Similar concerns on sub standard produce from other countries have been raised. Is that racist too?

HollyGibney · 21/07/2018 01:07

Playing the victim? Can you explain what you mean by that? Because it sounds like you think I percieve having a child with autism as a negative thing that I can use to elicit sympathy. I don't. Sounds like you do though. How disablist of you Shock

Grin

Thanks for the laugh.

The so-called "hygiene and quality" restrictions imposed by the EUROPEAN have the primary purpose of protecting French and Italian agriculture. The whole nonsense about straight bananas was so that the former colonies of the Netherlands would have an unfair advantage over other banana producing countries in the Caribbean.

So you never had Indian tea, Basmati rice, cardamom, Saffron, black pepper, cumin, coriander, tamarind until the EU came to protect your delicate tummy?

caroldecker · 21/07/2018 01:22

The UK is the worlds 5th or 6th largest economy (depending on which exchange rate you use) and larger than the African continent - hardly small fry.

India makes up 28% of EU rice imports and you also know all these new rules only came in in Jan 2018. Basically anyone born before then will die a nasty and early death due to poor food regulations.

Want2bSupermum · 21/07/2018 01:23

What European standards is it that you talk of? You know for pork production, Spainish farms pump 15x the amount of antibiotics into their hugs compared to Denmark. It's permitted but not good for humans.

A lot of food grown in India is organic because of the farming technology not being advanced due to the high cost of investment. Using chemicals is expensive so a lot of farmers just don't use them. It's been the same in Poland and other eastern bloc countries for years too.

Reading the article there is an awful lot of 'could' which is extremely misleading.

Holly As a parent of 2 ASD kiddies I highly recommend melatonin. I give mine 1mg at night and they are fast asleep and don't wake up until the morning.

FrancinePefko42 · 21/07/2018 01:26

Carol - be careful. You're stating facts there!!
Remainers are still only interested perpetuating in irrational fears that pander to prejudice.

wafflyversatile · 21/07/2018 01:28

If into a want to sell us unsafe food they only want the same as the USA who also want to sell us food we currently would not allow.

NigelGresley · 21/07/2018 01:32

You’re right, they’re not great at everything, but at least problems are found and addressed, and lessons are learned. I only buy British pork products as most pork in the EU is a source of hepatitis and needs cooking much longer than recommended times.
