Brexit

I’ve hoped something good would come of this but it isn’t working

I have gone through the various emotional cycles on Brexit.
First the upset
Then the reflection
Then the sadness and letting go of bits of my identity
Then connecting with optimistic leavers and turning my face to the future.

Now I am starting to deal with requalifying in Ireland and finding a virtual office in the EU. I also have to give a seminar on the impact in my area (a small cog in the big wheel) and the title is “how to Brexit-proof your xyz”. But I can’t see how to.

And I hate the way the business of government has almost stopped because of the focus on Brexit.

The only person who seems to be on top of his brief is Michael Gove.

I’m turning towards John Major! Yikes!

Can anyone cheer me up, or do I just need to accept that I really really want this not to happen :(

Sadly, that's a no thanks. It's a huge shower of shit.

Mistigri · 02/03/2018 11:51

The only way out of this mess now is a no-confidence vote. It will happen, IMO, but we aren't there yet. (And it's quite possible that the no-confidence vote will come too late to help).

The only person who seems to be on top of his brief is Michael Gove.

I don't want to make a snarky response to what was obvious a genuine post but - really? Was that sarcasm? Gove, as in the govt minister who is claiming to have done something about plastics etc when what he is actually doing is implementing EU decisions?!

But what happens then?

Mistigri · 02/03/2018 12:32

A general election.

That doesn't guarantee a tidy solution, because that would require at least one of the two main parties to have a Brexit policy in their manifesto that is actually achievable, and for that party to be elected. But it could realistically be expected to lead to A50 being withdrawn or extended.

noblegiraffe · 02/03/2018 12:34

Don’t forget ‘we’ve had enough of experts’ Gove is responsible for your mess. Remember he was the one who said the Queen was in favour of it.

MichaelBendfaster · 02/03/2018 12:35

Both of which seem highly unlikely.

But it could realistically be expected to lead to A50 being withdrawn or extended.
Yes. I do worry though that that would leave us in the same position as I suspect we're going to be in if the Tories continue –permanently in a state of leaving the EU with the details just being kicked further and further down the road, while the place declines slowly but steadily.

I never ever thought I would be sticking up for Michael Gove.

Of all people.

But he actually seems to believe his own arguments. That's my new standard in politics. It's a very low one, I admit.

Yep, I really really want this not to happen.

I'm sorry? He who said at the Tory party conference we'd be ok economically by giving the example that we could now export unpierced pigs' ears to China!

And he who told the assembled audience that the nasty EU restricted our pigs' ear export market.

Except that the labelling regulations (which I found on his department's own website in about 30 seconds) made it perfectly clear that the labelling could be done on the pigs' shoulders. So unpierced pigs' ears could be exported anyway.so he was basically spinning utter nonsense in the agricultural sphere which he is running for the whole country.

I told you I was clutching at straws

Gove is the worst sort of populist. When I hear him speak he reminds me of the 1930s and not in a good way.

May I join
Only bright spot I can see after yesterday speach, is it seems to have shut down the more lunatic/extreme end of Brexitters
So Boris, Gove, IDS and even Jacob Rees Mogg seem to now except that we can't just walk away from talks and trade on WTO rules. We will have to stay closely aligned to EU rules and even try and stay in some agencies. Even accept possible ECJ rulings. Plus no longer mention of arbitutory immrigration levels. Now talking about correct numbers for UK economy to continue to expand
As a remainer, who accepts we will have to leave this seems the best we could hope for. I know it isn't remaining, but it is as close bearbehind's BINO I could think off.
It too sems to satisfy lots of leavers on Brexit arms too.
Although most leavera see it as 1st step to freedom, I also see it leaving the door open to future generations to say it hasn't work lets rejoin. We are still members of parts and work closely with them on everything else
Even last Monday I wouldn't believe this could happen. We where still been told no deal is better than a bad deal rubbish
Sorry its long

Thanks user,
That’s actually pretty positive.
