Regretters only please: Leavers who want Remain and Remainers who want to Leave

Many Remainers are hoping for a second referendum, especially since Nigel Farage indicated he was supportive of one.

Some polls and anecdotes now seem to indicate a shift in voter sentiment away from Leave to Remain (or at least Leave voters who regret their decision.

On the other hand, a recent YouGov poll has shown a resurgence in favour of Leave. Perhaps some Remainers are now being convinced we do need to Leave as well. Moreover, the Leave factions in HMG and in Parliament seem to have a strong voice with the media

For those that have changed their minds and believe they made a mistake, what convinced you?

Firm Remainer but putting a marker down to follow ...

Link please?

I'd be interested in how the questions were framed. I participate in lots of YouGov surveys and am often astounded at the leading questions or lack of options in the multiple choices.

Moreover, the Leave factions in HMG and in Parliament seem to have a strong voice with the media
You're not kidding. You have to ask yourself why... For example, WHY do UKIP get more airtime than the Greens when they don't have a single MP?

Are you referring to the question on page 2?
Would you describe that as a 'resurgence' in favour of leave? Can you explain?

Sacrebleu50 · 22/01/2018 11:28

Hi twofingers, the objective of this thread is not to question whether there is or isn't a shift in attitudes towards Leave (or Remain) or even to challenge the robustness of polls, but to hear from those who have changed their minds now that 18 months have elapsed since the Referendum.

Are you one such person? If so, what caused the change of heart or mind?

OP posts:
twofingerstoEverything · 22/01/2018 11:46

No, I'm not such a person. Nevertheless, given that we don't have thread police on MN dictating who can post what, I thought I would query your assertion that there's 'a resurgence in favour of Leave.

Sacrebleu50 · 22/01/2018 11:51

That is a fair point, two fingers.

Expect lots of both remainers and leavers to turn up shortly and start shouting about how their decision was absolutely the right one.

Human beings rarely admit to faulty judgement, even if their decisions bring the world crashing down around their ears. Which is why there is little actual sign of regret anywhere.

Sacrebleu50 · 22/01/2018 12:23

Possibly right. There does seem to be exceptions - the lies provide cover, whether from Boris/Gove or Project Fear - but it's hard to tell if they are real or planted like the one on twitter below (typos are real however):

Totally agree. I would like a chance to revise my decision now that I know so much more. I feel mislead. I voted leave. Democracy is progressive therfore I should be allowed a chance to change my mind. I know I'm not alone. #FBPE

Still, I'd like to hear from some who have changed their minds. Surely they exist.

Following because I am nosy.

Worth bearing in mind that the referendum was 18 months ago and in that time a number of older voters will have died, and a similar number of young people will have turned 18. Older voters were much more likely to be leave voters. Assuming that the new voters will vote in a similar way to 18 year olds did at the first referendum, you'd therefore need a certain number of remain voters to change to leave, in order for the overall result to be the same.

FridayThirteenth · 22/01/2018 12:44

I agree Brawne.

I doubt there are enough 'Bregretters' to shift opinion massively as people are stubborn and entrenched generally. I don't know any remain voters that have changed there mind, but I do know a couple of Leave voters that, like OP, would vote remain given the chance.

I think the most significant shift in general opinion will come from those that voted before now not voting (either due to dying or general voter apathy that is likely with voters that came out for the referendum but aren't usually engaged) and those that didn't/weren't able to vote now voting.

I think we are a way off a decisive answer though and if there was another referendum the gloves would be off and the campaigning would be just as misleading as the last time.

I couldn't bear it to be honest!

Sacrebleu50 · 22/01/2018 12:51

Sorry Friday. I don't recall saying I had changed my mind or whether I supported Leave or Remain. I'm sorry if I implied this.

I'm genuinely interested in reasons why those who have changed their mind did so.

No criticism intended for either direction, just want to know motivations.

Can't think why Nige wants a second referendum. Moi. Je ne regrette rien.

FridayThirteenth · 22/01/2018 12:55

Ah apologies I missed that the comment was a cut and paste tweet!

Feelitstill · 22/01/2018 13:06

Doesn’t matter whether people regret their decision or not, there won’t be another referendum. What would happen if remain won by a similar margin to leave? or if remain ( or leave ) won by an even smaller margin? what if it was 50/50?
It’s just too much of a minefield. I know remainers would argue that we know a lot more now, but that doesn’t alter the fact that the ‘winner’ could win by the tiniest of margins, & the ‘loser’ would be up in arms again.
It’s not best of three as David Cameron said.

Sacrebleu50 · 22/01/2018 13:08

Thanks Feel.

Be that as it may (and you may be right), I'd like to hear some opinions.

Regretters only, please. Going either way ...

Queeniebed · 22/01/2018 13:09

Well, what do (DAILY FAIL) you think?

AgnesSkinner · 22/01/2018 13:15

It’s not just me that had the lazy DM journo alarm bells ringing then 🤔

LondonMum8 · 20/02/2018 13:58

"What would happen if remain won by a similar margin to leave?"

We would stay in the EU, implement Cameron'so benefit curbs and move on until the public demands another referendum. Beats jumping off the cliff.
