Would you pay to keep your EU citizenship?

Apparently 60% of Brits would:

Part of me thinks yes but the other part thinks why the hell should I pay because someone else voted to take my rights away?!

it is a nonsense poll - unless you are going to take up nationality elsewhere then you will not be a member of the EU - there is no option to be a member of the EU while not being a citizen of one of its member nations...

besides the EU has had its day :)

allegretto · 02/07/2017 13:55

Well the percentage is even higher for the 18-25 age group. I guess they can see the advantages of being able to live and work in Europe.

I don't see the point of paying to keep it. If you are in a job or have skills which are in demand, you will be able to live and work in Europe anyway.

DH is non-EU and has lived & worked in 5 European countries in the past few years very easily. Equally I have lived & worked outside of Europe and got visas very easily.

If a young person wants to move to Europe for work, but gets put off now by the prospect of visas, I would seriously reconsider whether they are prepared enough to make the move mentally.

Frazzled2207 · 02/07/2017 15:07

Yes. More importantly to me however I would want my children to have an option for EU citizenship, somehow.

lalalonglegs · 02/07/2017 18:44

I already have: I have dual nationality but the passport from my EU country costs far more than it does in the UK and I have just spent several hundred pounds registering my children's births with its consulate in London. I would have been happy to spend much, much more to ensure that they have the option of EU citizenship when they are older.

I agree, allegretto, that forcing people who did not want any part of this to give up their rights is disgusting. I'm pretty sure that this was pointed out as a consequence before the vote and Leavers dismissed it as Project Fear and now look where we are: 3 million EU citizens in limbo in the UK, and more than a million UK citizens in limbo in Europe.

soapboxqueen · 02/07/2017 19:01

Yes I would as I think it is important. The EU have been looking at creating a federal citizenship anyway, so being an EU citizen but not a citizen of an EU country. Offering it to UK citizens post-brexit would just bring the timetable forward a bit.

Mistigri · 03/07/2017 21:00

I'll be paying to keep my EU citizenship one way or the other, so the answer is yes.

My kids got theirs for free, due to being born in the right place.

SwedishEdith · 03/07/2017 21:07

I certainly agree with the "why the hell should I pay for something that's being taken away from me and my children" feeling. And, depending on the cost, it's simply unfair on those with low incomes who also want it (in fact, may need it more if want to move to another EU country for work). But I've started the process of getting another EU passport so I already am paying. Angry.

TheNumberfaker · 03/07/2017 21:28

Yes I would, and for my children too. I'm hoping Brexit collapses in a tsunami of facts and truth before we are due to leave.

Cupofteaandtoilet · 03/07/2017 22:40

Same as TheNumberfaker.

Topseyt · 05/07/2017 02:32

Yes, I would. Resentfully. I am with Numberfaker too.

Brokenbiscuit · 05/07/2017 02:45

Yes, I would. I'd pay for dd to have it too. I really resent the 52% who voted to take my rights away from me. Angry

Absolutely not. It was a good day, that day, when we voted to leave Wink

Teabagtits · 05/07/2017 04:17

I would love to keep my eu citizenship but unfortunately I can't afford to pay for uk passports let alone pay to keep something I was automatically allocated at birth and didn't wantbripped away from me against my will. Yet another thing that's only for the well off

engineersthumb · 05/07/2017 05:39

I most certainly would. Fortunately my children have dual nationality and hold both passports. I have a lifeline as I'd be permitted into my wife's country of origin due their status. I'm outraged that a slim majority in a campaign of lies could deprive me of the right to live and work in any member state and threaten the stability of my family. Slowly we are preparing to leave but having lives here it's a slow process. I just hope we do get a vote on the final deal, discussing to think people are suggesting that we shouldn't do so.

peukpokicuzo · 05/07/2017 05:55

There is no amount of money that could be handed over to the eu whereby I could still keep the things I most value: protection for employment rights; protection for the environment I live in; the benefit of having a cheaper regulatory system for vital new drug developments by sharing the costs with 27 neighbours. All sorts of things we benefit from will be abandoned in the name of "cutting red tape" and "freeing up businesses to boost the economy" - and having paid to keep an eu passport will not make the slightest bit of difference.
