Brexit

Data, data, lots of data (about this board)

SummerLightning · 07/04/2017 06:52

I posted this on the Westministenders thread, but thought I would add a new thread for it.

There was some discussion about getting some stats about posting times and what/who people posted about at one point a while back.

So I ran some basic analysis on threads and posts on here. You can see a nice graph of it here

public.tableau.com/shared/B6QDZQKDH?:display_count=yes

It looks better on a desktop rather than a phone, though I think it will work on a phone.

Select a date or a group of dates at the top and you can see the top posters for that date or set of dates.

Select a poster and you can see the dates they posted.

I have made a basic stab at colouring some of the more prolific posters blue (remain) or red (leave) according to their persuasions.

Here are some facts I put together:

There have been over 127,000 posts on the board since it started

Over 5000 of these are from one user alone. I will leave you to look at the stats to see who that is Grin

Of the top 10 posters only one is pro-leave

There have been 36 Westministenders threads. So that’s over 35000 posts.

There have been 11 Brexit arms threads.

There are several peaks of posting:
The referendum date (over 5000 posts on 26th June)
Around 3rd November (probably the Tory party conference?)
Around 17th Jan (when it became apparent that yes we were leaving the single market)
Around 17th Feb (not sure? Tony Blair throwing in his tuppence perhaps?)
29th March (Article 50)

Enjoy. If you want to, I think you can download the actual data I used from this link too.

(I did it to learn some new skills rather than to prove any political point, btw. Oh and Tableau is awesome)

PS There is nothing "dodgy" or "hacky" about this, it is very basic taking data from the internet where you all put it Grin. I know nothing about you posters except your usernames (no Cambridge Analytica cleverness from me!).

I have almost no interest in the debate (I did vote and still believe in my vote but the debate can get a bit nasty so stay out) but.....

I love visualisations and data

Which is what I get paid to do as well! Hello Summer!

(I don't use Tableau, I use a big rival)

SummerLightning · 10/04/2017 15:25

I think there are some people who have very odd reasons for voting the way they do swedish, kind of one issue people.

Someone (I think on here) was saying their ukip remain voting relative was a ukip voter purely because they said they would reverse smoking ban in pubs.

OP posts:
SummerLightning · 10/04/2017 15:27

HI quit, what is the rival out of interest?

I don't do data visualisation at work at all, and am pretty un-arty so I'm not sure if I could do it for a living, but I do work with data and technology. (hence I don't actually know much about the main technologies/tools)

OP posts:
WrongTrouser · 10/04/2017 15:45

That Ashcroft poll - 4.8% of Labour Remain voters and 4.3% of Lib Dem Remain voters intend to vote UKIP

And then there's the 20% of remain voters who prioritise ending freedom of movement over staying in the single market. Unless they have changed their minds and would vote leave if the referendum was rerun, that seems an odd stance.

QuitMoaning · 10/04/2017 15:46

I use a product called QlikView. I didn't choose it, it was a corporate decision and I have not used a different product so cannot compare but I like QV well enough.
I have a course in June about visualisations and that is using tableau so I will have a better view after the course. It won't change the product we use at work though.
I love my job!

Dannythechampion · 10/04/2017 20:16

Wrong,

I think a significant number of people have been swayed on both sides by the have your cake and eat it argument, in my business I'm under no illusions that this can happen, but trade deals and their implications are very new to much of the electorate and I think many people believe the aforementioned narrative.

WrongTrouser · 10/04/2017 21:29

The figure I referred to was asking people specifically whether they would prioritise ending freedom of movement or staying in the single market, so not a cake and eat it scenario. 20% of remain voters said they would prioritise ending FOM.

Dannythechampion · 10/04/2017 21:40

Yes but I think even some remain voters believe that we can have all of the benefits of the single market without FOM. Some might be desperate in that the EU might come to its senses etc.

Its interesting that there was nearly the same % of leave voters who would prioritise the single market over immigration 16% if I'.ve read it right.

There was another set of data months ago too that showed that in the leave vote most people wouldn't be willing to be financially worse in exchange for controls on immigration.

SummerLightning · 10/04/2017 21:42

I think you've read it wrong wrong. on page 175 of that doc is that data, it goes from 0 (prioritize access to SM) to 10 (prioritize control of immigration) and the % for remain voters goes
0- 20%
1- 8%
2 - 10%
3 -11%
4 - 8%
5 - 17%
6 - 6%
7 - 5%
8 - 4%
9 - 1%
10 - 3%

OP posts:
SummerLightning · 10/04/2017 21:47

apologies wrong I see where you got it from now, the 20% is those of 6 and above in the text description of the survey, rather than directly from the data.

Cos I saw the 20% I thought you'd looked at the data and got them back to front.

OP posts:
SummerLightning · 10/04/2017 22:10

Same for leave is
0 2%
1 1%
2 3%
3 4%
4 4%
5 16%
6 8%
7 13%
8 13%
9 6%
10 26%

It doesn't surprise me that some people are this way round. There are remainers with concern over immigration, or who maybe think that now we are where we are we should prioritize immigration reduction, or who think we can have what we want and still control immigration.

Similarly there are reluctant leavers or leavers who wanted a EEA type agreement who didn't have a problem with immigration.

Oh dear, garden

You must have been posting a lot to get in the top 10 around then.

Are you breaking your solemn promise now by posting here?

OP posts:
SwedishEdith · 11/04/2017 00:42

I know you're not in the UK, Summer but are you British and did you vote? (I'm not interested in what you voted.)

SummerLightning · 11/04/2017 00:45

Swedish I am british and lived in the UK at the time of the referendum, and yes I did vote.

If you advanced search me you can probably guess what I voted if you are nosy.

OP posts:
SummerLightning · 11/04/2017 00:55

oh and I have not forgotten about the time of day thing. I have half done it. I have noticed that roughly even amounts of posts throughout the day from about 8am - 11pm, only going down in the night!

I need to make it work on a per poster basis though so it's easy to see the trends for a paritcular poster.

"However after my 'incident' I made a solemn promise to try to avoid EU threads to MN in order to be allowed back. Thank you MN "

Shocking.

I said somewhere else, (cant remember where) until MN acknowledge that calling someone a racist, (where they havent posted anything remotely racist because if they did theyd be banned anyway), but simply were called it for voting leave, is highly offensive, and should be treated as such.

In the outside world, pre-referendum, it used to be illegal. Weve got so used to it being thrown around now, made popular by the remain campaign, we sit back and accept it. Try calling someone fat.
(Shakes head in despair)

Listening ears on MN. Racism and immigration are two utterly separate concepts. The EU referendum had nothing, nothing whatsoever to do with racism. These boards should reflect that.

SummerLightning · 11/04/2017 01:10

Yes probably - unless you are in the top 30 overall I won't have got to you.

I haven't marked me either I don't think! I have, despite being a lurker, apparently made 50 or so posts on the EU ref boards. (before I started this thread)

Oh and I am a remainer. Just saying that now before everyone advanced searches me as if you do that I am super recognisable. Don't really care that much, but still(!) I don't name change as I like my user name.

caroline also meant to say you are quite right about November and trump.

I got that wrong, sorry. It was in October. I do think there were a lot of posts about it though.

Think I must have blanked out the US election date for my own sanity.

OP posts:
SummerLightning · 11/04/2017 01:15

Sorry there were a lot of posts about the Tory party conference, which was in October, not November!

OP posts:
Carolinesbeanies · 11/04/2017 01:24

Ooops. Should have read your next post Garden Geek. 😀 I read it that youd had to promise to MN!

(Apols MN too......)

However, my sentiments about the allowing of the whole 'racist' slur I stand by. As weve seen with Danny, despite scuttling off to the safety of 'some voters', their intent has clearly been to personalise the racism accusation on individual posters here.

(Im sure posters will pop up with 'of course some leave voters are racists', of course they are. I absolutely agree with that.) But the racist voters, didnt win the referendum. Im also not ignoring the fact that some racists in the UK, have jumped on the band wagon of hiding behind the facade of legitimate leavers concerns. But again, they are not the majority. No where near. There is a very small faction in this country, and they are reviled equally by as many leave voters as remain voters. I wish that message would get through. However, I would not, nor will I change my view on the EU because some small band of gobby supremacists, hijack a cause, and worse, the opposing camp leap on that to tarnish the legitimacy of the majority.

Anyway, I digress, massively. Nice to see you here Garden Geek.

Carolinesbeanies · 11/04/2017 01:26

and poor MN had to clean up my hissy fit

LOL GG. Heres a first, Flowers all round.
