Westminster: Brexit is the hard right's weapon of mass distraction

The fervour and divisions over Brexit have suspended normal party politics.

The staggering incompetence & unsuitability of Corbyn as a leader, together with the resulting impotence of Labour has removed the normal checks & balances in UK politics.
There is a vaccum where the Official Opposition should be, so Theresa May is under pressure only from her right.

I fear Thereas May and the Tory rightwing are taking advantage of Brexit to complete the destruction of the post-WW2 social contract and the welfare state.

Meanwhile, the constraints of civilised discourse have been loosened and those with racist or social Darwinist views now feel free to spout their poison openly.

Zoe Williams:
"Behind a smokescreen of bogus patriotism, ideologically driven cuts to the NHS and all our public services are unpicking the bonds of nationhood"

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/mar/05/brexit-theresa-may-falklands-war-nhs-cuts

"We should be marching against the crisis in adult social care, the closure of care homes, the systematic exploitation of carers, the £4.6bn cut from social care budgets this decade.
We should be .... asking:

“What exactly is the plan, if we’ve decided we can no longer afford to care for the elderly and the disabled?
What do we do with them instead?”

"We should be marching against cuts in education funding"

"Every morning we wake up to someone on the radio explaining, despairingly, that you can’t fix the hospital bed crisis until social care is fixed, and you can’t fix that until council tax brings in more, and it can’t bring in more because wages are too low."

"But when everything breaks at the same time, that is not a coincidence: it is a plan.

As surely as Margaret Thatcher had an economic plan on employment, rights, industry and wages,
this century’s Conservatives have a plan on public services, which is to smash them beyond all recognition."

Thomas mair had lots of BNP stuff at his
Home

BNP denied he was a member

Thomas mair would have voted leave

He yelled "Britain first" as he murdered Jo cox

And that scum farage said leave won "without a shot being fired"
Fucking disgrace

Thegruffalowswife · 07/03/2017 17:40

Yes true...

She went to court over a political issue though so...

I agreed with the decision in court, but if you didn't you might see her as an opponent of sorts.

I hope whoever did this is locked up and they throw away the keys. It really is disgusting.

Thegruffalowswife · 07/03/2017 17:44

Does Britain first mean out of Europe then? Can you not be racist if you are European?

So we don't know what he would have voted?

I expect it probably would be brexit, but I guess we will never know.

His crime was despicable though and he stole a mother and a wife and a kind human being. Very sad Sad

HashiAsLarry · 07/03/2017 17:45

I sometimes find myself reminiscing about the BNP. At least they were honest about their racism. This is how far down the rabbit hole we are Shock

Thegruffalowswife · 07/03/2017 17:47

I sometimes find myself reminiscing about the BNP.

AAAHAHA HASHI MUST BE A LEAVER!

Peregrina · 07/03/2017 17:52

Ron from what I remember of my history lessons, the decline of the British Empire started around the turn of the 20th Century. Or perhaps it was more that we had become complacent and other countries began to overtake us in manufacturing....

I honestly wouldn't like to commit to saying that the UK will stay as it is. No doubt this is why Theresa May was making speeches in Scotland - she doesn't want to be seen to be the one who broke the UK.

Badders123 · 07/03/2017 17:52

Grufalo...to some, yes

Some of the utter bollocks I've heard spouted since June 24 is mind boggling

"Farage is a liar but at least he's an honest liar"

Um....what?

"We've got to get the Muslims out"

What Muslims? Where? No muslims where I live

I'm not going to pretend I understand these
People ^ I think they are ignorant and racist and xenophobic

By the same token they would call an elitist snowflake

Divides have deepened and will continue to do so

Budget will be interesting

Some more rabid leavers might be upset...

Badders123 · 07/03/2017 17:53

I know what you mean hashi!

I think my country is a fundamentally different place than it was this time last year

HashiAsLarry · 07/03/2017 17:55

Well here we go again. Take half a statement and twist. Hmm

Anyway, back to the matter at hand. More on Dubs:

Keir Starmer
Proud to have voted for the Dubs amendment but it will be refugee children who pay the price for this backward step…

Tim Farron:
The #Dubs vote by Tory MP's shames Britain. To not help vulnerable children in need is utterly heartless and heartbreaking.

Nicky Morgan apparently voted against party line in this. Fair play to her.

Thegruffalowswife · 07/03/2017 17:56

Are you saying you would prefer it if the BNP were in charge of the uk?

Thegruffalowswife · 07/03/2017 17:57

Teeeheeeheee

Thegruffalowswife · 07/03/2017 17:59

And you say you don't like racists and want to stay in the eu? So you are reminiscing about the more overt racism of the BNP than the current conservative government as you would prefer it?

Badders123 · 07/03/2017 17:59

Don't be ridiculous

The BNP are a group of thick as pig shit racist thugs

But at least everyone knew that

UKIP and the far right of the Tory party have the same views but wear suits and ties
And have funding

A subtle difference, granted

whatwouldrondo · 07/03/2017 18:00

Peregrina Yes there was also the economic decline that resulted from continuing to rely on Empire for markets, which was compounded by trying to hang on to Empire to help the recovery post war, rather than build the UK economy.

Interestingly FIL was stranded in the desert during Suez, he still receives a special pension for the Skin Cancer he developed as a result of being left waiting with no supplies and no protection, as it dawned on the British government that it was no longer the world power it thought it was. Truly a soldier of an Empire in decline.........

Thegruffalowswife · 07/03/2017 18:01

Pmsl

WrongTrouser · 07/03/2017 18:01

And this is that leavers do to those they disagree with;

Especially if it happens to be an educated
Woman...

Christ.Threats if rape and mutilation. Just for insisting on the rule of UK law

I quite understand that people on these threads don't want to keep rehashing the same old arguments with leavers. I don't want to either, but, it really isn't possible to just let that sort of post go unchallenged.

I voted leave and I am no closer to, no more responsible for and no more alike to the person who threatened GM than anyone who posts on these threads. I know you slightly backtracked on your follow up post, but then a little JC reminder gets thrown in. I'm sure there are sick twisted psychopaths who voted leave and I'm sure there are some who voted remain. Neither "group" is responsible for the actions of everyone who voted the same way as them on 23rd June.

Badders123 · 07/03/2017 18:01

There is no doubt that now racists and xenophobes think they have a political mandate for their views

And - so far under TM - they are correct

Scary times to disagree with the "establishment"

Thegruffalowswife · 07/03/2017 18:02

The pmsl was about what badder said just toclarify

comfortandjoyce · 07/03/2017 18:02

Thank goodness our European friends are showing Britain the meaning of true human rights and decency towards migrants ... aren't they?

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/hungary-parliament-asylum-seekers-detain-law-approve-refugees-immigration-crisis-arrests-border-a7615486.html

The Hungarian parliament has approved a controversial law enabling all asylum seekers in the country to be detained and forced back into neighbouring Serbia.

Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister, claimed migrants were keeping his country “under siege” and must be defended against.

Speaking at a swearing-in ceremony for a group of specialist guards known as “border hunters”, he said that Hungary could only count on itself for protection.

The new legislation will see refugees locked in border camps made of shipping containers while their cases are decided.

But shhhhhh... Britain's the bad guy, right?

Badders123 · 07/03/2017 18:04

Wrong

I'm sure you aren't

But - as I've said before - you share a platform with those that DO

I judge people not just by their actions, but the company they keep.

It's not something we shall ever agree on, obv.

Mistigri · 07/03/2017 18:04

They're really worried about something, aren't they? There hasn't been as much traffic on these forums for months. Usually this is a hidden backwater of MN, you're not even allowed to post about Brexit on the more popular parts of the site.

Something has really, really got up someone's nose in the last week.

HashiAsLarry · 07/03/2017 18:05

badders whilst the government carries on down this track they'll continue to feel more justified in it too Sad

Thegruffalowswife · 07/03/2017 18:06

I agree wrong trouser.

I do not agree that they have a mandate badders.

Badders123 · 07/03/2017 18:06

Yes
Yes that's we are saying
The EU is perfect and you all smell

Ffs
