Westminster: Brexit is the hard right's weapon of mass distraction

BigChocFrenzy · 07/03/2017 07:21

The fervour and divisions over Brexit have suspended normal party politics.

The staggering incompetence & unsuitability of Corbyn as a leader, together with the resulting impotence of Labour has removed the normal checks & balances in UK politics.
There is a vaccum where the Official Opposition should be, so Theresa May is under pressure only from her right.

I fear Thereas May and the Tory rightwing are taking advantage of Brexit to complete the destruction of the post-WW2 social contract and the welfare state.

Meanwhile, the constraints of civilised discourse have been loosened and those with racist or social Darwinist views now feel free to spout their poison openly.

"Behind a smokescreen of bogus patriotism, ideologically driven cuts to the NHS and all our public services are unpicking the bonds of nationhood"

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/mar/05/brexit-theresa-may-falklands-war-nhs-cuts

"We should be marching against the crisis in adult social care, the closure of care homes, the systematic exploitation of carers, the £4.6bn cut from social care budgets this decade.
We should be .... asking:

“What exactly is the plan, if we’ve decided we can no longer afford to care for the elderly and the disabled?
What do we do with them instead?”

"We should be marching against cuts in education funding"

"Every morning we wake up to someone on the radio explaining, despairingly, that you can’t fix the hospital bed crisis until social care is fixed, and you can’t fix that until council tax brings in more, and it can’t bring in more because wages are too low."

"But when everything breaks at the same time, that is not a coincidence: it is a plan.

As surely as Margaret Thatcher had an economic plan on employment, rights, industry and wages,
this century’s Conservatives have a plan on public services, which is to smash them beyond all recognition."

woman12345 · 08/03/2017 12:00

I understood ron to be highlighting another success of the feminist movement, and here or there or anywhere ( not matter where we are in the world), it's great to know how far we've come.

And Trump and Brexit have been a good reminder of how far we have to go.

Happy Women's day again to everyone, and thanks to all the women who fought for my rights to enjoy the freedoms I have had thus far.

Badders123 · 08/03/2017 12:05

On this #IWD I remember my dad's cousin who had a back street abortion and died in agony, alone, on the kitchen floor of peritonitis. She was 17.

I remember my mums Mum who had 17 children in rural Ireland because she had no choice.

I remember those who came before me and paved the way for safe abortions, contraception and pay equality.

We have a long way to go....

But look how far we have come

Happy women's day Grin CakeFlowers

I'm going to have a happy mens day in my house tomorrow for my husband... just in case mens achievements run the risk of being trivialised, by successful women shouting about their vaginas.

November 17th
International Men's Day

For the purposefully obtuse amongst us

whatwouldrondo · 08/03/2017 12:09

MissMoon I would have thought my posts on here were proof enough that I understand all that. That without the benefits of EU membership supporting our competitive advantage in global markets otherwise known as May's unicorns we could well see our economy reduced to the extent that will justify in Conservative eyes the further rolling back of the welfare state and, what is left of, the safety nets for the poor and disadvantaged. I am angry and sad about that. However I think part of the impetus to the Leave vote was that people don't believe that could happen, that things could not get any worse. That somehow those unicorns will come galloping across sunlit uplands. Now where does that sense of entitlement come from?

It looks pretty decadent from the world's 112th largest economy....

Thegruffalowswife · 08/03/2017 12:09

17 jeez.

ElenaGreco123 · 08/03/2017 12:12

Happy International Women's Day from me as well Flowers

Last night it didn't feel it was proper debate. I namechange to my latest literary obsessions all the time, but even to me it sounded trolling.

whatwouldrondo · 08/03/2017 12:13

But yes my post was really celebrating one young woman who has achieved her potential against all the odds.

HashiAsLarry · 08/03/2017 12:13

In Russia men are celebrated on 23rd February according to my new neighbours. It is officially Army day, but lately also counterpoint to IWD.

whatwouldrondo · 08/03/2017 12:17

Jojo I highlighted in my post that the EU is part funding the mine clearance programme, along with a lot of other countries where the people are asserting their rights as they recover from the effects of tyranny . That is precisely the sort of project I want the UK to remain in the EU to promote. Instead we now have Pritti Patel reducing and tying aid to trade, probably illegally. This incredibly short sighted policy is provoking real resentment in developing economies. Not in my name.

HashiAsLarry · 08/03/2017 12:17

badders
For your cousin Flowers

woman12345 · 08/03/2017 12:19

Sorry, your gran, badders 17 births, unbelievable.

HashiAsLarry · 08/03/2017 12:21

Just in case anyone doesn't know Richard Herring has spent the last god knows how many international women's days responding to people on twitter who complain about there being a day for women with the date of international men's day. It's a joy to behold. And largely why I've been on the ball with tweets today!

woman12345 · 08/03/2017 12:24

Even the Daily Telegraph is turning against May:
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/08/sacking-lord-heseltine-theresa-may-has-missed-opportunity-show/

Badders123 · 08/03/2017 12:24

Yep. It is.
My mothers oldest sibling was 21 when she was born. My grandmother died simply worn out. Can you imagine being pg or post natal for 21 years!? Had a dreadful effect on her MH too by all counts.

My dads cousins death was tragic. Her younger brother killed himself afterwards too. My dad didn't tell me any of this until I was in my 30s.

Badders123 · 08/03/2017 12:25

She was lucky tbh
14 lived to adulthood
She had a neighbour who had 13 dc none of whom lived past 3 😞😞😞😞😞😞

woman12345 · 08/03/2017 12:27

Good god. Thank feminism for our contraception.

HashiAsLarry · 08/03/2017 12:29

Similar with my gran badders. 10 live births, multiple miscarriages, 24 years between eldest and youngest.
