It is a recognised phenomena, taking on board the attitudes and ideology of the host country rather than representing your own government to your host.

Its indicative of how this is going to be run.

The best example of how not to do it is how IDS said he ran his deptartment up thread. Because that was such a mess no one wanted to touch it so they couldn't even reshuffle him.

Unicorns for all.

It would seem many Leavers are under the impression that we were the elite head member of the EU, rather than it being a club of equals. We are one member. It is not the Empire. We cannot dictate to the EU as May seems to think. It is not a case of telling them how it is. We need to be diplomatic, or they will tell us how it will be. And it will not be good in that case!

It is not easy As always you resort to generalities and hyperbole, I suppose at least you didn't avoid the question entirely because you had to answer the doorbell, which was a particularly memorable bit of leaver avoidance of the issues....

All those people who are busy inventing things and pushing at the frontiers of Science and technology, and the business people like me who are already working hard to facilitate trade are saying that in the interests of an illusory control of sovereignty, which will be even harder when we are the ones without power in negotiations with the rest of the world, especially Trump's US and Xi's China, you are going to make their ability to deliver growth an awful lot harder, if not impossible. That is just the commercial issues, never mind that we have weakened Europe in the big game of swinging dicks that is going to play out between Trump, Putin and Xi in the months/ years to come. Well done, you shot us in the foot

From a pro Leave website, no he had not 'gone native'.

The UK did get concessions, many a time. News seems to be just rolling soundbites and speak now. Just some reporting someones statement as if it were gospel. No real analysis or questioning. Or dare I say a search for the facts.

We don't need experts of course, lying bullsh*tters are where it is at now!

I was watching one of those many programmes about WWII on TV. There was Hitler going on about clearing all the politicians out. The same day I heard Farage on the radio saying all the Foreign office should be cleared out (civil servants, I guess). Then the programme went on about how the Nazi party had their debts paid by supportive rich business people. Then I see UKIP's bankroller Aaron Banks (or whatever alias he is going under) for some reason airing his views on what should happen. It was a strange. Will someone be watching a programme about the unfurling situation in the UK in 80 yrs time?

I think Farage is more a Lord Haw Haw myself.

I agree, the UK got lots of concessions, Cameron got most of what he asked for. But the soundbite people keep saying the same thing so often that it gets believed, its why you have to challenge them with the actual truth, because if we don't then this fictionalised version becomes the truth.

I think Farage is more a Lord Haw Haw myself.

I've always thought of him as more of an Oswald Mosley, and UKIP as closer to the British Union of Fascists. They had some very wealthy members and supporters - eg the owner of the Daily Mail of course, aristocrats and members of the royal circle. They weren't all straightforward 'thugs'.

Figmentofmyimagination · 05/01/2017 15:11

I'd recommend Martin Pugh's book "Hurrah for the Fascists - Fascists and Fascism between the wars" which looks at the early years of fascism, its supporters and methods, what went wrong for the BUF and the reasons why it failed to get a proper foothold in the UK. Very interesting, although sad that it now has a contemporary resonance.

The printing press - Germany
Internal combustion engine - Belgium
The light bulb - USA
Contraceptive pill - USA
Sewing machine - France
Satellites - USSR

Chocolate - Mexico
Tinned food - France

Backing Interestingly, Rogers never did the brief at Rue Ducale attended by lots of the Brits at NATO. MILREP goes, as does the Ambassador to NATO, and the Ambassador to Belgium, but Rogers sent an underling.

Some UKREPs do go native and have been noted for it. Dh has been in Brussels for over a decade and Rogers was the 4th UKREP he had seen, and he wasn't overly impressed.
