Brexit price rises ....

I thought a thread for people to post details of price rises that can be attributed to Brexit might be interesting.

so:

Microsoft (22%)
VMWare (15%)
HP (10%)
Lenovo (10%)
Apple (20%)

For now, I'm not adding in suppliers that have moved from charging in sterling to Euros (strangely not dollars Hmm). But if that seems a trend, maybe they should be added in ?

Oooh can I do some number crunching?

Right so I'll use a CPI index for each year

2009 = 100
2013= 112
2014= 115
2015= 121
2016 = 143.

Excluding the current year the trend shows that prices increased by 3.5% on average each year. This current year shows a price increase of 22%.

:) Fun

Darth,

Well, given the way you calculate percentage rises, I am not sure you can do some number crunching! A rise from 121 to 143 is an 18% rise, not 22%.

Also, where on earth did you get your chosen CPI index from? What CPI is it. I can see nothing like it from the ONS. The latest official CPI is 1.2%.

DarthPlagueis · 30/12/2016 17:08

Its not a CPI index, its using the prices listed of the software to create one, using the first one as base.

if I was calculating using the penultimate year as the base then the rise would be 18%.

I thought I'd use an index to attempt to see if the change was part of a pattern or not.

larrygrylls · 30/12/2016 17:15

Darth,

So, to sum up, you created a series based on the largest price rises that people remembered and quoted the rise based on the 2009 base. Right...

Well, the closest actual index that I can find is the 'Computer, Electronic & Optical products' series....which is up by a massive 1.8% November to November (see data series below).

2015 NOV 97.9
2015 DEC 97.9
2016 JAN 98.1
2016 FEB 98.3
2016 MAR 98.3
2016 APR 98.3
2016 MAY 98.2
2016 JUN 98.5
2016 JUL 98.8
2016 AUG 99.4
2016 SEP 99.3
2016 OCT 99.7
2016 NOV 99.7

What I find really remarkable is how little inflation there is, given the devaluation. The BOE now expects inflation to hit 2.7% next year, which is high by recent standards, but still very low historically. There is an argument that we actually need some reasonable inflation in a healthy economy.

'The Bank now expects inflation to hit 2.7% next year, up from the current rate of 1%. It also raised its forecast for economic growth next year to 1.4% from 0.8%, but cut expectations for 2018 to 1.5% from 1.8%.'

DarthPlagueis · 30/12/2016 17:20

No I used the price of the software to create an index ( using the way you calculate the CPI rate too) and then looked to see if there was a trend.

As the years that we have, apart from 2016, the rate increase ( from the base year) at about 3% and then in the penultimate year by 6%, with the largest and increase being this year which is way out of the pattern.

It may however have been a futile and pointless exercise.

TuckersBadLuck · 30/12/2016 17:24

Just to be clear, the prices I quoted weren't any kind of 'index', they're what I've been charged in £ for paying exactly the same amount in $ ($60 I think, from memory) over the last 7 years. I've just paid 18% more than I paid last year even though the service is still charged at $60.

The OECD reckons the UK:US PPP FX rate is about 1.45, roughly halfway between the pre and post vote rates

Daffodil bunches up from £1 to £2 at M&S.

Sorry to lower the tone of the thread Grin

Christmaslight22 · 15/01/2017 22:45

Ohtoblazes - come on...daffodils are not in season...if they are £2 in April that's one thing but it's January and we had snow last week. My snowdrops aren't even brave enough to be out yet!!!

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 15/01/2017 22:56

Never seen daffodil bunches sold for more than £1 in any UK supermarket, ever, until today. Maybe I need to get out more Grin
We've had no snow at all and my snowdrops are out.

Christmaslight22 · 15/01/2017 23:24

I'm jealous that you've got snowdrops - mine were out this time last year...but they're not yet brave enough this year....if daffs are more than £1 in the spring, you can have some of mine GrinFlowers

sorry for derail folks!
