This isn't about whether you are pro remain or brexit I understand that thread has been done to death.

BUT are we really going to lay back and allow ourselves to live in an undemocratic society because this time it's the result we might potentially want?

How on earth is it democratic that some of us receive one vote on our country's future and others two?

What does this open the gates to in the future? People in power grabbing more and more power. We are being walked all over and it's ok?

This isn't about brexit or remain - I was pretty neutral to be honest but did vote one way in the end. I wasn't particularly bothered if it went the other way. This is about changing the definition of democracy!

What's undemocratic is governments seeking to act on major things without (Parliamentary) scrutiny.

And MPs and ministers criticising judges whose decisions they dislike!

Dozer · 04/11/2016 07:32

The leadflet quoted in the Daily Mail ("This is your decision. The Government will implement what you decide.") didn't say "without approval from Parliament"!

Anyway, voters did not vote on what exit / trade terms should be sought, only one Q, whether we should leave or not.

GrinchyMcGrincherson · 04/11/2016 07:33

*The judges upheld the law and the sovereignty of the elected parliament.

It doesn't get more democracy then this.*

Exactly. Also it's not even necessarily going to influence the decision to leave at all. It's basically ensuring that parliament as a whole get a say on terms etc.

Personally I think we can't trust the Tory party to do anything by themselves. We need that balance and the next steps to be made by the entire government we elected NOT by a single person and her hand selected team.

This is the biggest decision our county has ever faced. It needs to go through as many checks as we can throw at it. Parliament may have another vote but it is one that WE gave them. We vote for our politicians to represent us in things like this.

The problem is not the Court, it's the government trying to get away with things that are not in their remit.

GrinchyMcGrincherson · 04/11/2016 07:41

Also there's a referendum topic. Plenty of continued discussion in there.

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 04/11/2016 07:47

The whole thing is a monumental fuck up from start to finish really. It was more of a game of political point scoring, personalities and billy bullshitting than about what was best for the country, and in my opinion a large majority of those voting (and I count myself in that number) didn't fully understand the implications one way or another, and what it would mean. I'm pleased that it is being reviewed, in whatever form that will take. Remainer here, if it makes any difference.

funnyandwittyusername · 04/11/2016 07:49

Dozer- the leaflet didn't say with approval from parliament either

Dozer · 04/11/2016 07:54

No, but government didn't / don't have legal authority to implement an EU exit without reference to Parliament.

Daisyonthegreen · 04/11/2016 11:07

The Thread starter is exactly correct.
I started a thread at the run up to the vote on the EU and was and still am an ardent Leave believer. Subsequently I was invited to start another thread on the EU vote by a fellow poster who happened to be pro Remain.
It contained lively debate.
If you feel strongly regards the Democratic vote please attend the protest below.
Google Brexit feet in London Demonstration.

There will be a protest demonstration outside Parliament on November 23rd at 10 am .
Please put on your social media.
Please attend.
Thank you for reading this.

I do think it is a teeny bit ironic that people votred leave to ensure the sovereignty of the British Parliament, but don't want Brexit discussed by the British Parliment.

Dozer · 04/11/2016 13:20

What are they protesting?!

Cailleach1 · 04/11/2016 17:14

But...but...there are no sovereign governments left in countries that are members of the EU.

How did this magic happen?

TheElementsSong · 04/11/2016 20:10

What are they protesting?!

Possibly, they are protesting that one of our great nation's three branches of government (our independent judiciary) has upheld the noble principle that another of our three branches of government (our executive) should seek the approval of the third branch of government (our elected representatives), as per our constitutional requirements. This separation of powers and resulting system of checks and balances, I had always understood, was a fundamental premise of a democracy.

Mo brexit, mo problems. Fuck, how has it been 20 years nearly?
