Will Angela make deals with Theresa before Article 50 is invoked?

Because TM said she won't trigger the bloody thing until we've got a good deal (paraphrasing!) but Angela has said she won't discuss anything and won't let her mates do either before A50.

Confused

Thanks, Gloria. I'm going to show that to FIL who is adamant that BMW will come to our rescue so that they can carry on flogging us their cars!

I hope that it Article 50 is never invoked though, certainly not until we have sewn up some amazing trade deals with countries outside the EU.

Terms of EU membership mean we cannot negotiate or sew up any new trade deals with EU countries or non EU countries until we have invoked Article 50 & have a withdrawal agreement. Apparently that doesn't prevent informal discussion.

Rather worryingly Brexiter & former Minister for Europe David Davis now in charge of EU exit appeared to think recently we could negotiate new trade deals with individual EU countries without involving the EU. That isn’t so.

STIDW · 15/07/2016 21:23

There won't be another referendum unless a party that promises one is elected prior to leaving the EU.

There won’t be another referendum to leave the EU but under the EU Act 2011 we may need to hold referenda for treaty changes. Withdrawing from the EU & a new trade deal would be changes of treaties.

Of course they'll be negotiating in the background. That's how world politics works

He also thinks we could get world trade deals done in a couple of years. Which I knew was nonsense even before I read Miriam's article.

Peregrina · 16/07/2016 00:05

Davis himself ought to know it's nonsense, having taken Canada 7 years to negotiate a deal, which is not yet ratified. Does he think it's 1947 and we have a whole load of Civil Servants needing to be repatriated from the Indian sub-continent?

GloriaGaynor · 16/07/2016 00:10

Canada's deal is going to be implemented in 2017, so that will be 8 years in total. And it didn't have to get itself out of the EU first. Nor does it have full access to the single market for financial services.

GloriaGaynor · 16/07/2016 00:13

He doesn't mention having to regularise the UK's membership of the WTO, currently under the aegis of the EU, which will also take time.

Mistigri · 16/07/2016 11:42

The big problem with informal negotiations is that they will not be binding. It only takes one EU country to throw a spanner in the works.

A similar issue will arise regarding negotiations with non EU country. What country will wish to commit large resources to formal negotiations before the terms of Britain's future relationship with the EU are determined?

smallfox2002 · 16/07/2016 15:57

David Davis ideas are completely round the twist, even the DG of the WTO said it will take a long time. Its incredibly complex and I wish people would stop painting it as an easy option, in fact this is why Azevedo said this, because people kept saying :" Oh we'll just revert to WTO rules" when that is not how the WTO works.
