To ask people not to harass me because of what I voted

IDoWhatTheFuckILike · 01/07/2016 17:31

I voted Leave. I do not regret it. People have been harassing me because of it, saying stuff like "you shithead you just want to ruin our country" or "how dumb are you, if we leave __ will happen". I don't want this to turn into a leave vs remain debate, and yes i do realise the referendum was more than a week ago. I just want to see if IABU to tell people to stop being mean because of what i voted.

lulucappuccino
I stupidly voted leave too, and deserve all the negative criticism thrown at me.

Sorry but I don't believe that you voted leave or that anyone that did vote leave deserves "all the negative criticism" thrown at them.

But then some of the "criticism" hasn't been criticism.

Renniehorta · 01/07/2016 18:20

Presumably you have the courage of your convictions. So you should be proud of the way you voted. Defend your corner.

I voted Remain and I am more than happy to explain why to anyone who asks. Actually no one has asked me because in my social circle we all voted Remain.

Permanentlyexhausted · 01/07/2016 18:21

I think you might well be right FaFoutis.

OohMavis · 01/07/2016 18:21

Right, but, all you have to do is not tell people...

Generally, if you tell someone something about yourself, like how you enjoy eating bananas, or how you voted in that massive event that happened only 7 days ago, they're going to have some sort of opinion.

"Bananas are disgusting"
"I think leaving the EU was stupid"

etc.

So just don't tell them.

mygorgeousmilo · 01/07/2016 18:24

Answer back with your legitimate reasons for voting to leave.... Oh yes, that's right Hmm

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 01/07/2016 18:26

Think about the poor people being shouted in the street about "Going back to their country" (even though this is their country.)

I feel sorry for them. Not for people who exacerbated this.

MrsJoeyMaynard · 01/07/2016 18:34

Agree that you shouldn't tell people how you voted if you don't want any negative opinions about it.
Maybe if anyone asks, try saying you want to change the subject to xyz because you're sick of referendum talk?

arethereanyleftatall · 01/07/2016 18:34

I voted leave. I have good, thought out reasons for doing so. I have defended my vote quite happily in all social situations where it's arisen.
Often when I have asked a remainder to defend their decision, they haven't had a clue.

heron98 · 01/07/2016 18:38

Well, they're right.

Sorry.

gonetoseeamanaboutadog · 01/07/2016 18:38

No sympathy for you. Don't tell them.

gonetoseeamanaboutadog · 01/07/2016 18:40

8Think about the poor people being shouted in the street about "Going back to their country" (even though this is their country.)

YES. You are so not the victim here and complaining only serves to show how little you care about the sizeable minority in this country who are afraid to leave their homes.

Northernlurker · 01/07/2016 18:42

I don't think you should be abused for voting leave but telling you that you were hideously wrong in doing so isn't abusing you so I will do that. You were absolutely wrong. Deal with it.

LurcioAgain · 01/07/2016 18:43

I voted leave. My close friends are aware of my reasons for doing so and are respectful pf my views (which they know stem from my experience of working in Brussels), even if they disagree. I simply don't discuss it with people who are merely acquaintances. Having said that, I could happily live without the "all 17.4 million of you are racists" rhetoric I'm seeing from some quarters, which terrifies me because in polarising discussion and leaving no middle ground it (IMO) makes it harder to tackle the hideous racism we have seen in the immediate aftermath.

whois · 01/07/2016 19:03

Hey, OP. My friend lost her major client due to brexit. She was about to employ a second person.

So now that job hasn't been created. And my friend is down to not having full time work.

Thanks. That's a direct result of your vote.

arethereanyleftatall · 01/07/2016 19:12

I think it's quite embarrassing how many people without a fucking clue, as clearly evidenced on this thread, have jumped on the 'I'm clever so I've voted remain' bandwagon. Smacks of emperors new clothes.

OldManJenkins · 01/07/2016 19:38

My aunty and my cousin had this big argument over this in front of my younger cousin and me. It was SO awkward.
Then the cousin in questions started making really rude comments about people with mental health aka my aunty not working and being a "bum"

Had to be one of the most akward moments and my family wonder why I stay away from them lol

Eigg · 01/07/2016 19:44

Boney Lulu had a thread about her voting regrets.

OP no of course people should be mean to you, of course not. But it is allowable for them to be upset about the outcome.

Winterbiscuit · 01/07/2016 20:53

OP, you had as much right as everyone else to vote for what you thought was best.

I could happily live without the "all 17.4 million of you are racists" rhetoric

Hear hear. Ditto to people automatically associating leave voters with UKIP Hmm when they were from a variety of political backgrounds.

BoneyBackJefferson · 01/07/2016 20:56

Eigg

If only we weren't anonymous people behind screens that could make anything up.

Nobody deserves the shit that has been slung because of the way that they voted.

Marmitelover55 · 01/07/2016 20:58

Arethereanyleftatall - surely the emperors new clothes is the leavers with their lack of exit plan...?

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 01/07/2016 21:12

have jumped on the 'I'm clever so I've voted remain' bandwagon. Smacks of emperors new clothes

I agree with marmite the lack of exit plan is much more emperors new clothes.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 01/07/2016 21:21

saying stuff like "you shithead you just want to ruin our country"

Well, if someone says stuff like that, they're not your friend (channelling Marge Simpson)
Are these colleagues, or family, or...?

Winterbiscuit · 01/07/2016 21:23

Who would have made the exit plan? If it should have been done by Cameron, I guess it means he was banking very heavily on a remain vote.

noblegiraffe · 01/07/2016 21:26

It's fine, you just explain to them why you voted leave and exactly why we're much better off now, and they'll be so excited they'll thank you for how you voted.

janethegirl2 · 01/07/2016 21:28

I voted leave and don't regret it but given the very strong feelings of some of my colleagues, I've been a little bit economical with the truth re my vote. I've not lied, but have not been upfront re my voting credentials.

To be fair, it's nothing to do with anyone how you've voted and if I was wanting to be arsy I'd tell them to fuck off!
