Is it likely that we will have another general election in the near future? Could one of the parties stand for remain and overturn ignore the referendum decision? If Art 50 has been invoked by that time, can it be reversed or is there no going back? Which party would be likely to stand for remain, the Conservatives and Labour are so divided at the moment, it is hard to know what they stand for.

Surely, if we asked to halt the process once Art 50 had been triggered, the EU would be happy to accept this.

The thing is that both the UK and the EU are bound by the law. The legal text which defines the procedure for leaving contains no provisions for rescinding an article 50 notification once the process is underway. It doesn't even consider such a possibility.

I'm not a lawyer and of course it may be that wriggle room could be found, but no one should count on it.

This is one reason why the leavers are so shy about triggering article 50 - because there is no going back, you have irrevocably committed yourself.

I bloody hope so. We need this mess sorting. We need strong parties with strong agendas and leaders. And whoever has the policy of not going through with it gets my vote. Libdems maybe? The result was based on lies and so should be deemed null and void!

Have a general election now and I think UKIP will finally have some MPs. it won't be the LibDems I can tell you that much. However, it's probably the only answer. Likely the Tories will have a proper majority and be able to do what they like.

I do agree with a commentator this week that UkIP actually having to say stuff in Parliament is the quick route to finally discrediting them, as they say a load of old tosh, are caught out, and rapidly splinter into 6 irreconcilably opposed mini parties of one true believing MP each.

No one seems to have addressed that fact that, if we do backtrack on Article 50 and Brexit, the EU would push us into far less favourable terms than previously and there would be no room for future negotiation which could push more people into the Leave mindset

I think there are a lot of people who, in this age of soundbites and social media, have not realised that Brexit, the moving through it and the recovery from it will take years.

Have a general election now and I think UKIP will finally have some MPs.

And then a mentally ill foreigner will be found amidst the smouldering ruins of the palace of Westminster, and the Queen will be panicked into appointing Nigel Farage (I honestly can['t believe I didn't see his initials until today !) emergency Prime Minister.

I think I've seen this film before ....

According to Geoffrey Robertson QC before Parliament can trigger Brexit Parliament has to repeal the 1972 European Communities Act which voted to take us into the EU. If MPs think that's not in our interest, they can vote against it.

The government can't trigger Brexit under article 50 just by sending a note to Brussels. We have to withdraw according to constitutional requirements, which in the UK means the approval of Parliament.

I am a staunch remainer and joined the LibDems yesterday. I really hope there is a GE and maybe we can stop this going too much further. Wishful thinking I am sure but I need light at the end of the tunnel even if only a dim and distant speck!
