AIBU to start to wonder if this petition might actually lead to something?

I thought nothing of it at first. Even when over the weekend it had got 2.5M signatures I still thought it was just a lot of people spitting their dummy out because they lost.... but now it's over 3.7M and growing, rapidly. So I've signed it too.

Do you think it might actually make a difference!!?

Every time we have an election we can stamp our feet and do it over if it's not the result we want?

a) This wasn't an election

b) When we have an election we know that if we don't like the result we can vote differently next time. There is no next time where leaving the EU is concerned.

RortyCrankle · 27/06/2016 17:43

No it won't and it's pathetic.

LilySnape · 27/06/2016 17:45

Yes it has been announced Brexit is happening and there will be no other Referendum which is why during the leave campaign we stated "there is no going back this is our last chance to leave " we ment it we won and its happening. Boo hoo remainers boo hoo.

PortiaCastis · 27/06/2016 17:45

Yes New he said that and and that a unit will be set up for the start of preparations

Permanentlyexhausted · 27/06/2016 17:53

Yes, the PM has confirmed there will be no second referendum. However, the PM, whoever he or she turns out to be, cannot invoke Article 50 without that being authorised by an Act of Parliament. That can only be done by MPs, the majority of whom are 'Remain' supporters.

glenthebattleostrich · 27/06/2016 18:00

MPs who are elected to represent their constituents views in parliament.

kslatts · 27/06/2016 18:02

We live in a democracy, we voted and 'leave' won. It would be ridiculous to have another referendum.

What would happen if 'remain' won the second referendum. It would be 1-1, does that mean we should have a 3rd referendum so it can be best of three.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 27/06/2016 18:03

MPs who are elected to represent their constituents views in parliament.

So my MP (a "leaver") should be voting "remain" then as nearly 60% of his constituency voted remain.

Permanentlyexhausted · 27/06/2016 18:03

Indeed Glen. We elected them last year to represent our views. If they don't represent your views the way you like you can vote them out. In 2020. Or does your MP canvass his/her constituents every week about the decisions he/she is going to make?

Just5minswithDacre · 27/06/2016 18:12

How many threads about this do we need?

VertiginousOust · 27/06/2016 18:19

I'm torn - on the one hand I agree that the leave vote won and a second referendum is pointless. On the other hand, I do think that there is much more further debate to be had, and it's a handy way of letting the government know the strength of feeling about this.
I've signed.

IonaMumsnet · 27/06/2016 19:38

Hi all,

After a great many requests, we're moving the bulk of the referendum threads to the new board here.

Many of you, understandably, want to discuss this subject at length and in detail - this seems a good way to simultaneously keep AIBU and Chat moving for those who don't wish to participate. Of course, the conversations will still appear in Active.

A4Document · 27/06/2016 21:12

YABU. I think a lot of remainers are falsely claiming they "regret voting for leave" Hmm
