Are we seeing any immediate job losses following the referendum?

Yes....dd graduated this week and 2 of her friend who had secured jobs were contacted yesterday to say company was now basing its hq in Berlin due to UK leaving EU.....so would not be taking them on

RiceCrispieTreats · 25/06/2016 15:09

So far, the City firms announcing the relocation of 1000s of jobs to Frankfurt, Paris, and Dublin.

gallicgirl · 25/06/2016 15:12

I read somewhere that Morgan Stanley are looking to move operations abroad.

Apparently Toyota in Derby has no plans to start building a new model once production of the Avensis ceases next year. Probably be quite few job losses there.

Tata Steel have put plans on hold in the North East.

I haven't seen anything more specific yet.

Balletgirlmum · 25/06/2016 15:14

Yes, a friend of a friend (who I have actually met) posted yesterday that she & an entire department in an international financial institution would lose their jobs at Xmas.

sugarmonster64 · 25/06/2016 15:14

City jobs losses already rumoured to have started. Whilst people may ideologically not be opposed to all those bankers leaving they will unfortunately be some of the highest tax payers

Whatthefoxgoingon · 25/06/2016 15:16

I'm sacking two people on Monday. It was planned in case of a brexit vote, as part of a larger wind down. There will be more staggered redundancies later on. Most businesses have had plenty of time to plan for either scenario so not surprising if things move quickly from this point onwards.

Snog · 28/06/2016 07:32

Sorry to hear about these :(
Anyone able
To confirm and company names?

It's not just City firms - my dp's employers (manufacturing) are very worried. Pretty much every contract they have has some dependency on an EU funded project. No job losses yet though.

DP has had some interesting conversations with Leave voting colleagues who seem surprised that their jobs might be at risk Confused

Thingvellir · 28/06/2016 07:51

Why are you asking? Feels a bit DMy this one....ask a personal/sensitive question and give nothing away yourself OP

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 28/06/2016 07:57

Snog is a long standing poster, Thing.

InMySpareTime · 28/06/2016 08:19

My sister found out yesterday that she's out of a job come Friday (city, digital sector) because the company she was contracting for lost a load in the Brexit fallout at the end of last week and needs to offload as much financial obligation as possible to ride it out.
She's now looking to emigrate rather than watch the country she loved go to shit.

TheNaze73 · 28/06/2016 08:21

This all sounds very journalistic

howtorebuild · 28/06/2016 08:25

I am sure a few failing companies will use Brexit to cover up business failings.

Sparklesilverglitter · 28/06/2016 08:29

No I've heard on none. I work in financial and not one job lose and we have been told if that was to happen it wouldn't be for some time as no company knows yet what new rules etc will be brought it and we won't actually leave the eu for a fair while yet. So I'm not really worried to be honest.

Sparklesilverglitter · 28/06/2016 08:31

There is a EU referendum topic for these threads

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 28/06/2016 08:32

I'm sure they will, howto. But if and when investment in infrastructure disappears, the kind of work my dp does will dry up. His employer won't be the only one.

Thingvellir · 28/06/2016 09:07

From my industry (banking in London) no immediate job losses that I am factually aware of but a lot of talk. I think non UK HQ banks will definitely move jobs out but may not be too bad if the negotiations allow EU transactions to continue passing through London. The U.K. Banks will almost certainly shrink in size and strength so there will be losses, but further down the line.

The long term affects of Brexit on financial services will be dire. The fact it hasn't happened yet doesn't make that less true, all the ingredients for decline are there with weaker currency, losses in business value on market, narrowing of market scope, uncertainty paralysing investment....

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 28/06/2016 09:10

As a sector, would you say finance is more skittish and reactive than others, Thing?

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 28/06/2016 09:26

Actually ignore that. Of course it is Blush

KatherineMumsnet · 28/06/2016 18:01

Hi all,

After a great many requests, we're moving the bulk of the referendum threads to the new board here.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eu_referendum_2016_

Many of you, understandably, want to discuss this subject at length and in detail - this seems a good way to simultaneously keep AIBU and Chat moving for those who don't wish to participate. Of course, the conversations will still appear in Active.

Snog · 30/06/2016 07:41

Nope I'm not a journo, just trying to sort out reality from the doomsday scenarios...wanting to gauge if immediate job losses were occurring and if so the scale of this.
