Are people actually taking this seriously, rather than as a gesture of how impotent/sad/scared/angry some Londoners are feeling and how divided they feel from the rest of England? I seriously doubt anyone thinks this is a serious proposition. I mean, the wording of the petition is a hint...

Please tell me that people aren't taking the London Independence Party Twitter account seriously.

JassyRadlett · 24/06/2016 22:31

Yeah, but Book, we'll be in the EU. Lots of duty-free cheese and wine. We'll be OK.

RJnomore1 · 24/06/2016 22:32

I'm happy to embrace the idea of an independent Scotlondonland.

Bookaboo · 24/06/2016 22:34

If you can get a visa through Kent jassy

Cherryguitar · 24/06/2016 22:35

Interesting idea. Lodnon could remain and also replace Luxembourg City perhaps or even Brussels as one of the official EU capitals. Bring it on.

Meanwhile I suggest Hull as the new capital city of Small England.

SanityClause · 24/06/2016 22:36

Actually, DD1 had this idea this morning.

She suggested that London be declared the provincial capital of Scotland, and we swan off to stay with the EU together.

I suggested that the Scots are sometimes not so keen to be governed by London.

Large cities can take in immigrants in large numbers, there are more jobs, more opportunities as there is more money

Smaller towns there tends to be less opportunities

That is why there are more divisions in smaller towns it's not that those living in larger cities are more accepting and liberal minded it's that their position isn't threatened too much people would soon turn if it was

SanityClause · 24/06/2016 22:49

Smaller towns there tends to be less opportunities

Which means fewer immigrants settle in these places. Why would you travel to work, and settle in a place where there was limited work?

The places with fewer opportunities don't have many immigrants. But the people who live in them may find it convenient to blame immigrants for their lack of opportunities.

Eh, we'll manage West-Berlin style.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 24/06/2016 23:13

It's not that black and white

There may be few opportunities or seasonal work and accommodation is cheap. Money was pumped into depressed towns, then cheap labour was wanted migrants could offer cheaper labour, the competition was there and wages stayed low and naturally wherever you have a number of immigrants they will form their own communities when they appear to be thriving and others are not and lack of opportunities to advance it often causes tensions

It happens in London too but there is more opportunities for everyone

Bookaboo · 28/06/2016 17:43

Seems like what started as s joke is being taken more seriously now
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/28/lets-not-stop-at-brexit-its-time-london-declared-independence/

So it's still not going to happen, but people are claiming for more power for London?
Like, how much power do they want?

And so the farce continues.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 28/06/2016 17:57

I thought this article made a lot of sense.

Bookaboo · 28/06/2016 22:17

It makes sense, but what does it bring to the context of this thread? Does it suggest that it is some sort of retaliation for the perceived resentment? Or does it emphasise a sense of ignorance to what the real problems are?
I'm not making any accusations here btw, just thinking aloud.
Either way, I'm not sure what these proposals achieve other than deepening divides.
