...but you are going to vote LEAVE; why?

"UK voters had the opportunity to change the first past the post system 5 years ago. They didn't by a considerable majority."

I know. I voted to keep FPPT. And I don't ignore the masking effect it has on the level of support for the 3rd place party.

Winterbiscuit · 20/06/2016 12:54

Patapouf you say "Democracy is overrated", yet in the same post, you tell a PP "you clearly don't give a shit about democracy", so I'm not sure what your position is.

I think democracy is vital. It's easy to take things for granted, until they are gone and it's too late.

katemiddletonsnudeheels · 20/06/2016 12:55

Because I believe migration has had a disproportionately negative impact on the poorest amongst us and I am concerned about that.

RitchyBestingFace · 20/06/2016 13:01

I think democracy is vital too but when you consider it's the House of Fucking Lords that has blocked the government's most radical austerity measures (which NO-ONE voted for) I'm a bit Hmm

Patapouf · 20/06/2016 13:15

I like democracy to a degree winter, my point was that the pp wanted to leave because the EU isn't democratic etc etc but then wouldn't respect the result of the referendum if it was remain.
I don't trust the politicians in the UK, or the public to be frank and I'd make a wonderful benevolent dictator
So, I wasn't really contradicting myself Grin

littlemiss I'll have to wont I? Once the ball is rolling we can't do anything to stop it. I'll just have to vote for the party in the next GE who is the most internationalist and human rights-friendly, same as I'd do if we stay!
I'd like to point out that the pp implied they wouldn't respect the result if it wasn't the result they wanted, not me!

bobster151 · 20/06/2016 13:25

Lots of people saying they're voting Leave but not why as the original poster asked...

herethereandeverywhere · 20/06/2016 14:12

Patapouf the nest analogy for the point you are making is that DC allowing a referendum on this issue is like a pilot asking the passengers to come and fly the plane.

In relation to the other points:

“Because the EU is a busted flush that's going to break apart before long anyway, better for the UK to be first out rather than clinging onto the wreckage” Limer

“The EU has had its day. We've got to think global and getting out now is the best thing we can do for our future.” Wordgetsaround

Regarding the first 2 points, what exactly is the evidence for this?/ what are you basing it upon? Is it the previous global recession brought on by the banking crisis? It can’t be the vast majority of financial institutions and economists advising precisely the opposite, ie: the UK and the EU with it will see a financial crash as a result.

“Not all conservatives are voting remain. Some are voting for democracy…” HSM

“I’m on the Leave side for democracy, making our laws in the UK” Winter
…but we do this already. The vast majority of legislation is made in the UK. Which European directives (brought in via democratic means at European level remember) do you find so odious?

Is it the Working Time Directive? TUPE? Unfair terms in Consumer Contracts regulations? Directives on clean beaches and bathing waters? Or perhaps you hated the way the UK tried, but failed, to block the regulation to cap bankers bonuses? Because the EU has served to make regulations which make this country better in many ways and our parliament simply would not have had the time to legislate all of this and the UK laws.

And what is the lefty/labour voters rationale for voting Leave? You do know that the minute the right wingers you've got into bed with have secured your vote they will kick you to the floor without a second thought. Recession brought n by a vote to leave won't affect them at all (plenty in their pockets for a rainy day). In fact they'll use it as an opportunity to by at the bottom of the market and when we eventually recover (5-10 years I'd say) they'll be richer than ever.

I thought I answered the OP's question but clearly I just didn't understand it. Confused

I think you're just asking why people are going to vote Leave aren't you? The UKIP bit is irrelevant.

Patapouf · 20/06/2016 15:08

Indeed OP. I think Cameron is an odious twat but he has a far superior political understanding than the average Brit (unfortunately).

I know someone (definitely not a friend!) who did not vote UKIP but is voting Leave. On the basis that leave is a legitimate, mainstrain, seemingly acceptable way to express their racism because they are reclaiming the country from EU claws whereas UKIP was marred as the nasty, racist, bigoted, uneducated party in the GE.

A neighbour who had a massive vote UKIP billboard on their land in the GE now has an even bigger vote leave poster.

Winterbiscuit · 20/06/2016 17:26

Most/all MPs have a far superior understanding of politics than the average Brit.

You do know that the minute the right wingers you've got into bed with have secured your vote they will kick you to the floor without a second thought.

We can vote the Tories out, especially if the negotiations take as long as the remain camp say. If the EU secures a "remain" vote from the UK they aren't going to be falling over themselves to prioritise us, if they haven't even done so when we're considering leaving. The EU may change quite drastically but it will be too late to leave.

JoyOdell · 20/06/2016 17:30

Because I don't want to be in the EU anymore.

Hth.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 20/06/2016 17:55

I fail to see how the EU is working so well if many countries have unemployment of their young people that is close to 50%, where the gap between the wealthy and those that are struggling to get by is getting wider, where we are unable to bail out our own industries but our markets are flooded with steel from China so our industry can do nothing but fail

Even the issue of zero hours labour MEP's have been trying to push for legislation but getting know where couldn't possibly be because it serves big industries to pay low wages and get out of paying holiday and sick pay

Really we need to leave all its done is create divides that have got bigger we are a progressive country we can continue to be after all a large number of people voting for change shows that people will vote out a government that makes decision that do not benefit the majority
