So obviously not important to the vast majority of mn but maybe to some. I know a fair few are considering taking up Irish passports but that won't really affect Ireland. Do we think the Irish economy will plummet if the UKs does will it benefit if the UKs decreases?
Will the border patrols with NI be restarted? Will we have an influx of businesses and workers and how will this effect our already getting out of the control housing market (again). Any opinions? I have to say the potential effect of the ref on our economy here worries me when we have absolutely no say in the matter

It's never happening here. It would be insane and anyway everyone I have spoken to here thinks The UK would be nuts to leave ;)

Hah an old neighbour at the border here in Ireland just told me he is hoping for an exit so he can sell land at the border for a new passport control/customs house. That's called eyeing up opportunities :)

I've had a think about this and can't see that Ireland has much leeway.

The problem is that it doesn't matter so much how Ireland see's it's own border, the EU will also see it as it's border!

Ireland's economy is fragile, the Celtic Tiger days are over and mainly resulted from overseas corporations setting up there to access our market. Google, Microsoft, Lidl, Apple, Aldi and the like would suddenly have to pay taxes here which would help our tax receipts to the tune of many billions ( possibly 10s of billions depending upon how the EU plays it) but also remove the incentive for them to stay in Ireland.

Remove that sector from their economy and things start to look very bleak indeed.

If the EU decides to play hardball and imposes stiff tarifs on services then these are going to be mirrored and Ireland will suffer catastrophically.

I can't see that they have any future in the EU.

I agree Kate, while Ireland would likely suffer from our national trades to the UK the international companies have not set up in Irland solely due to its prox to the UK there are massive incentives and we are essentially their European hub which will continue just minus the UK. Also many many companies in the UK are considering moving to Ireland to maintain an EU presence so as far as I can see while we may suffer in one area we will hopefully benefit hugely in another.
