Hi
Does anyone use Ecotricity ?
Can you tell me about it - is it as green as it seems to be?
I am a bit new to this, apart from the bog standard cloth nappies, recycling, organic/local where possible etc. Just trying to up my game on the green front a bit and thought this might be an easy change to make.

Any other easy changes to make to ease my family into greener living - especially as dh is the type to say 'one family cant make a difference', so needs to be things that do not sacrifice to much for him.
We have always lived without a car, but we have to get one soon, so really want to up my 'greenness' to make up for that.
Does that make sense or do I sound a bit mad??

Ecotricity are 50% renewable (from their website here.

Good Energy are 100% renewable - though I don't know how their prices compare.

Its really worth while getting an energy monitor as reducing the amount you use makes a big difference (and saves money of course. There's a good article about them & comparing different ones here

I think this site is good for easy things to do (most of which also save money, always good, especially now)

And no, you don't sound mad at all.

Sorry, ecotricity fuel mix is here

ImSoNotTelling · 04/07/2010 17:53

I am with ovo on their 100% green electricity tariff. I get my gas through them as well (which isn't green obv) but it's simpler to have it all with one provider.

Have never heard of these other ones will check out the links

The reason I switched to OVO was that they came near the top when I did a moneysupermarket comparison. So they were pretty competitive - I don't know what their rates are like now though.

Takver · 04/07/2010 18:39

Good energy also do a gas tariff though its not immediately obvious (here)

OVO look good too.

There is a new certification scheme for green electricity, which guarantees the green-ness opf the product and aims to make it less confusing for the consumer (like Fair Trade or Soil Association). It is called the Green Energy Supply Scheme

A good indication of greenness is fuel mix - all the suppliers now offer renewable tariffs, but most of them still only sell a tiny amount of renewables overall, which is why they can be more competitive on price than the truly green suppliers - their green electricity is subsidised by selling cheaper brown and nuclear to their other customers. The only supplier who has a 100% renewable fuel mix is Good Energy

It is not currently possible to supply green gas from the UK into the grid.

ImSoNotTelling · 05/07/2010 09:47

Ovo isn't on your list for some reason fibonacci. That's annoying. The tarrif that I am on is their 100% green one apparently, I hope they're not lying
