Cleaning with less chemicals

My new year's resolution this year is to be greener and I've decided I'd like to try cleaning without / with less chemicals. Please share your tips with me!
Are there any alternatives to washing up liquid?
What do you use to anti-bacterialise kitchen surfaces / to mop the floor with?
How do you clean the loo?

stardrops is one of the best for everything . It is a deteregent,a disinfectant, suface cleaner....i use it to clean cream leather suite. It kills lots of the bugs in a kitchen and its one of the only ones to kill cryptosporidium which is a nasty tummy bug.

It cleans windows ,mirrors,UPVC,crockery,tiles....All i use is that and ibcol

i use ibcol on kitchen floor and work surfaces.

white vinegar and water, mixed half and half in a spray bottle. I use for whole bathroom, even better if you get some of those microfibre cloths. Great for shower screens, mirrors, sinks, baths, windows and toilet seat etc... Do still use squirt of bleach in toilet though
There was a thing on here about kim and aggy off how clean is your house, with lots of tips for cleaning. Bicarbonate of soda just dampened with water is excellent for stains on a sink/cooker etc is a gentle abrasive.
Think it was a webchat... will look

humptynumpty · 16/01/2010 22:17

kim woodburn webchat, loads of good tips on there!

Wow! Thank you so much for the super fast answers.
Alypaly - What are stardrops?

OP posts:
alypaly · 16/01/2010 22:32

its in the detergent section in the supermarket. It has been going since my mum was a young girl. You can use it for everything including cleaning the fridge and it isnt irritant to the hands either. I always take a small bottle on hols when i go self catering as my family caught cryptosporidium in Greece one year(off some dirty kitchen units( not due to me...previous occupants or cleaner susing wrong cloths) and the doc recommended it.
I am ultr cautious now and clean the surfaces in the appts i go to before any of my food goes anywhere near them.

TeddyBare · 16/01/2010 22:38

stardrops.co.uk/ is this it?

OP posts:
alypaly · 16/01/2010 22:44

www.stardrops.co.uk/about-us/ this is the one

alypaly · 16/01/2010 22:49

its been around for over 70 years so that says something for how good it is. It grings my soft leather suite which is pale rose cream up beautfully and it is safe to use in he fridge too and as a washing up lquid, so you dont need millions of bottles in the cupboard

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 16/01/2010 22:49

I don't think stardrops is particularly green, is it? Or maybe I'm thinking of someting else.

Lemon juice or white vinegar are good for cleaning the bathroom. Add tea tree oil if you can't stand the smell but it doesn't last long.

The co-op do a good, clingy loo cleaner.

TeddyBare · 16/01/2010 22:50

Thank you

OP posts:
alypaly · 16/01/2010 22:53

it is biodegradable and classed as non hazardous

TeddyBare · 16/01/2010 23:03

Which essential oils are the most anti-bacterial? I hate the smell of lavander. Half white vinegar and half water with some drops of essential oil in - would lemon juice work instead? tea tree oil?

Where can microfibre cloths be found?

OP posts:
alypaly · 16/01/2010 23:16

eucalyptus oil is germicidal. Cost co sell large packs of microfibre,or e-cloths as some call them. They a brilliant for the high gloss kitchen surfaces, mirrors and glass and tiles

alypaly · 16/01/2010 23:16

most supermarkets sell e cloths now

alypaly · 16/01/2010 23:19

citronella oil is antiseptic, bactericidal, deodorant, diaphoretic, insecticide, parasitic, tonic and stimulant.

TeddyBare · 16/01/2010 23:46

I love citronella but I hadn't thought to use it for anything other than as a nice smelling insect repellant. Thank you for your help.

humptynumpty · 17/01/2010 10:17

teddybare, you can buy ecloths but much cheaper and the same thing from tesco, think we got 3 for £1. I just keep washing them, look next to the jay cloths and scourers etc...

TeddyBare · 17/01/2010 10:43

Thank you. I will head off to tesco later.

OP posts:
humptynumpty · 17/01/2010 13:54

hope you get on with them teddy, i found them fantastic, never quite understood the ecloth, but apparently you can use it without any chemicals because the fibres in it are so good for cleaning or something - anyway, that's the theory...

I buy Ecover washing up liquid in bulk (25l or 5 X 5l lasts a year)

Ecover dishwash tabs are rubbish

Ecover fabric softner also in bulk

Simply laundry tabs (Ecover has bleach in theirs - AVOID!!)

microfibre cloths

Ecover toilet cleaner in bulk (BioD is also good)

Ecover multi-surface cleaner in bulk

Non-eco productsbecause I can't find a good eco product)
supermarket dishwasher tabs
supermarket floor cleaner
supermarket bathroom cleaner
drain unblocker for our showqer

Highlander · 06/03/2010 11:01

i don't use furniture polish. I rinse a clean microfibre cloth in hot water and clean with that. rinse out for every room and launder after every 'dusting' session
