Anyone suggest an alternative to high thread count cotton sheets that is more ethical but as soft?

Second hand cotton or linen sheets?

Seriously, you can get lovely vintage linen sheets which are beautifully soft.

You need to iron the for the full effect, but that's true of cotton as well, tbh.

vintage linen or cotton - I have a french chateau sheet that is beautifully monogrammed and is 130 years old. It's soft as butter and it cost me £50. It's still very strong too so will probably last me all of my life.

here's an example

What about bamboo?

Weirdly this is the second time that I have linked to this website today - www.wellcultivated.co.uk. They don't have sheets, but you can buy fabric from them - there is a phone number 0115 921 2979 to phone them to see if it's suitable for sheets.

Oh yes vintage - I've never found duvet covers but plenty of lovely eiderdowns and sheets.

would prefer suggestions for something new as I would like duvet covers too. Bamboo is interesting. I couldn't make sheets but will look at their towels when I replace ours.

no other ideas? Anyone tried hemp?

Won't be around for a few days but thanks in advance for any additional ideas.

Organic cotton sheets? use less chemicals but still use a lot of water.

I bought some from John Lewis recently and quality was good. Gossypium also does them.

we have organic cotton sheets but even organic uses masses of water.

I have many hemp fitted sheets, I am very happy with them. Generous cut (unlike my polycotton cheapos which barely fit on the bed any more), getting softer with time and use. I don't iron, so can't comment on that feel -- which is important to some ppl, I guess.

Problem is I have ordered from many sources so can't be sure where I got them. Healthy House and Spirit of Nature are where I usually buy stuff like that from.

I looked into Bamboo... it's not as eco-friendly as some make out. Conventional chemicals boost bamboo yields so most growers use some chemical inputs, even if strictly speaking they don't need to use them to make a profit. Whereas I think with hemp chemical inputs don't change yields enough to make the chemical inputs profitable.

Both hemp & bamboo are reliable low-water input crops, at least. BTW, I have a 70% bamboo-30% cotton top, which (over last 2 years) has been just like 100% cotton in feel/washing reqs/durability.
