rain covers for toddler in bicycle seat

this doesn't seem like the right topic to post under for wanting to buy something (so consumerist!), so apologies, but I can't see another, and I'm hoping to find some fellow cyclists here.

I cycle ds around on a seat on the back of my bike. if we get caught in some of the heavy rain we've had later he gets soaked, and a little rain jacket from mothercare just isn't up to the job. can anyone recommend a proper rain cover for a toddler (17mo) in a cycle seat (Hamax sleepy)?

not travelling is not an option (he has to get to nursery and I have to get to work), I can't drive, and there's no bus. the journey is about 2 miles.

have you found anything that works?

thanks

Hi,

I am just looking for the same - I know they exist! Check for example Edinburgh bicycle cooperative and search for
"Cycle cape for child seat" but I am sure plenty other brands exist!
Rain can't really be avoided or predicted all the time!
I haven't actually started cycling with my son yet. Just got the bike and seat this week but drivers don't seem very considerate here so I might just walk with him on the bike up to nursery and cycle to work from there..

We have an "Eager" cycle cape which came from the same cycle shop as our bike seat (Co-Pilot). However, it doesn't cover legs very well so I tend to team it with a puddlesuit. The cape was more expensive but longer lasting and the waterproofing seems better (mind you I've only bought cheap puddle suits off ebay) .

You could try posting on freecycle?

Northernlurker · 31/07/2009 13:30

I just fight dd3 into her all in one puddle suit. Tbh your body and the seat and helmet protect them from a lot. If they are wearing weliies a cape will do enough.

Good point Northerlurker - I've been surprised how much I protect DS. However our journey is 8 miles each way, quite a long time to sit still if you're wet, hence what might seem like overkill in the waterproofing dept.

ponch? Seperates last longer than all in ones tbh. A poncho and a pair of waterproof trews over wellies might work.

MamaChris · 31/07/2009 16:54

ponch looks a great idea perfect to cover bike seat as well as ds. may be a bit big (ds only 18mo), but that will just help keep his toes dry too, right?

thanks for all the suggestions

I love that pocho with the bee on - perfect for dd3 - Beatrice known often as Bea!

Am bumping for some feedback
Have found cheapo covers on ebay or am tempted by the ladybird poncho but someone on another thread said their poncho billowed in the wind.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated
It will be for cycling on school run but along the canal and cycle paths only
Would appreciate words of wisdom or experience cycling in the rain with >1 year old

I used to put dd in muddy puddles dungarees/waterproofs & wellies. The hood fitted fine under her helmet, & she stayed a lot drier than I did Grin

I'd also recommend their fleece balaclavas & ski mitts for winter time. I always found that cold was a lot more of an issue than wet, its easy to forget that you're cycling energetically & keeping warm, whereas they're just sitting their & freezing quietly . . .
