Do you patch clothes to wear them longer?

I know I'm weird, just wondering how far out on a limb this puts me. Am I the only one?

I just wear them with the holes in. I'd patch up DS's knees but he grows out of the trousers faster than they actually last anyway.

Was considering this for DD trousers too. I have seen them in 'chic' kids shops (never pay that money though!)

Will be interested in responses...

Patches look great on kid's trousers I think, and you can make the patches out of old clothes that they have grown out of and/or are too stained/worn to pass on to charity shops/friends.

You can get really nice patches in good sewing shops - I've put a sequinned flower onto the knee of a pair of jeans recently and it looks really good. I think darning is also more socially acceptable now.

I patch my jeans when they get holes or worn areas between the thighs (fat thigh alert!). It saves a perfectly good pair of jeans from going to the bin/rag pile. I thought everybody did it.

My very smart SIL patches all her ds's trousers on the knees from the word go. I think she uses iron on patches. They look cute (think chino-style trousers) and make the fabric more hard wearing.

Phew! That's good. I'm not the only one .

I made a cool patch that looked like a little black pony, complete with tail and mane, for the hole in knee of DD's grey school trousers! And honestly, I am not very creative at all.

I patch my knees on jeans, and the odd tear in fleece jacket/similar. I also sew buttons back on or replace with a similar style button if one has gone missing, and garment is otherwise in good nick.

I don't try to darn any more, I can't figure out how to do it without it turning terrible lumpy.

I patched the knee on my jeans with a completely different fabric (think chintzy floral!).

The amount of compliments from people who thought that I had bought them with the patch on was amazing.

I patch dds trousers when they get holes in the knees - I do them with flowery fabric edged with contrasting coloured ric-rac (sp?) & I think they look v. cute.

Sadly I always seem to trash the zips on my trousers rather than getting holes in them, & my sewing skills are definitely not up to resetting zips. I do darn socks and jumpers though.

I haven't yet got to my mum's levels yet though - she used to embroider flowers over holes in my tights when I was little.

All our clothes get patched as we wear pretty dire stuff to work in so it does not matter how awful they look.
I 'turn' shirt collars too when they get worn out and they come up quite well. Broken zips get replaced with zips taken from old clothes.
The clothes that are completely beyond repair go for cleaning cloths.
Cushions covers are made from felted jumpers.

I do this - my kids clothes often need patching or just repairing. They are happy to be able to keep wearing them. I can spend the money I save on their shoes lol!!

I patch up DS's trousers frequently.

I've used bits of material from elsewhere in the trousers (eg a spare pocket as he is three and doesn;t actually need pockets!)

I;ve also bought extremely stylish faux leather patches (think Geography teacher) and then cut them in half and made them into four patches. Am so cheeky that I actually sold on some patched trousers he'd grown out of at a "nearly new sale" in my defence the trousers were still in v good nick - just the knees had gone and I had sewed the patches in beautifully......

Does anyone know where I could purchase a darning mushroom thing? I do darn our socks a lot and am currently using the thread spool but really need a mushroom thingie

GentleOtter · 06/05/2009 16:50
