Repairing fridge freezer

I have recently been given a fridge freezer that is is perfect body condition(!) but a few weeks after I got it, it has broken down. I really don't want to buy a new one as it looks like new, but the callout charge from the manufacturer is £98 + parts. It is probably the compressor that has broken which is £120. I can't believe that I would have to pay as much to have it repaired as to buy a new one. And I don't want to be filling up the land unnecessarily.

Any ideas about how to find a reliable non-manufacturers engineer to have a look at it?

a wash machine engineer i have used also used to do fridge/ freezers.
he used to charge a max of £60 when he came out and would say there and then if it would cost more and how much it would cost if it was likely to be more so can decide if its worth it. had no call out charge either.
my mil recomended him to me, think she got number out local paper
