... a toilet that has really bad limescale in it that can't be shifted by elbow grease alone? have just moved into a new property (well, new for me anyway)and don't really want to use nasty chemicals such as commercial limescale removers, so what can i use instead?

Empty out water. Soak cloths/looroll in lemon juice nad spread over limesclae. Leave for as long as poss (overnight is good) Scrub with pumice stone and elbow grease. It works really well.

Also try white wine vinegar poured straight onto the limescale. Leave for a few minutes then proceed as per ShauntheSheep's advice.

And something keeps nagging in my head- coca-cola? Will have to look up about that.

Grr. Not white wine vinegar. (must get mind off wine). White vinegar.

Lenlen · 07/03/2009 06:05

but it's white vinegar that does the wonder.

pindywopwop · 07/03/2009 06:20

I will second vinegar (any sort). It works better if you use hot vinegar too.

Ordinary coke (not diet)
Left over night

no you need to scoop it out. Or sort of push it beyond the u-bend.

blueballoons · 27/04/2009 23:12

PUMICE!!

Sounds mad and unpleasant, but it works great. Clean as normal, then get out a pumice stone (like you'd use for your feet), get your arm in the bowl and rub. The toilet isnt so germy after a normal clean, and you wash your hand/arm afterwords. Its fast, simple, doesnt harm the porcelain, and doesnt involve toxic chemicals.

According to my eco-housekeeping book, citric acid works well.

Been meaning to try it for ages as we have some in the cupboard left over from making elderflower cordial last year, but haven't tried it yet.

Will watch thread with interest.
