So I went ahead and got a mooncup

Is it supposed to be so low that the base of it is only just inside?

I take it there is no way of getting it in without you hands looking like something out of a horror movie?

I have developed a back ache since inserting it about 5mins ago, could that be because its in wrong or could it be run of the mill ppain?

Has anyone had problems taking it out after taking the whole stem off? I feel i want to but am worried about it being too hard to get out??

Can't believe no-one's answered this one.

Come on all you mooncup loons.

bran · 14/02/2009 22:04

I get the impression that different insertion depths suits different people. I don't insert it very high at all, but some women are more comfortable with it higher up.

Most people end up taking the whole stem off, After I cut it off I rounded the cut edges with a nail file so it didn't chafe. To remove it you bear down and it will drop down a bit, then pinch the bottom a little to removed. I find it easiest to take it out at a slight angle.

I find I really don't get that bloody, no more than with tampons. I usually insert it in the morning when I'm in the shower so that one is pretty clean. Then later in the day it's also not too bad unless it's very full and I've spilled a little blood inside myself when removing it. On the whole I actually find the whole thing much less gory than using a tampon. It'll get better as you get used to it I'm sure.

I'm not sure about the backache. Do you think you may be sitting a bit strangely if you still have stem on it? Or you could just have tense muscles because you are thinking about it being in there.

I took nearly all the stem off too - to be honest it wouldn't matter if i did I think. It takes a while to get used to though and on the 1st day I couldn't stop thinking about it!

persevere - it very worth it - i will never go back to tampons again!!

CuddlyKelpie · 14/02/2009 22:25

Did someone call for a mooncup loon?

I let my pelvic floor muscles decide where it sits, clench a few times and it positions it just right for me - it is quite low though not poking out.

I do know that before I got used to that squeeze it used to put pressure on the rear so I got a kind of (TMI warning) back passage ache. I got that with tampons too though so might not be what you are experiencing.

The blood bath thing is inevitable at first but I now only get two fingers gored-up and not really that much. I also put it in first thing in my morning shower but I don't need to empty it til the night nowadays. When I first started using it I had a much heavier flow and had to emply a few times during the day.

I was worried about cutting the stem off, I did it in stages at first but then lobbed the lot off. Bear down a little, grip with first two fingers, pincered and it comes out ok.

I hope you develop mooncup-love, it is a revelation even if it does take a little time to grow.

Thanks all! I have had a fiddle and it feels better. I am already really in love with it, I can't get over the not having to throw anything away thing. I know its obvious and that is why I got the thing, but really no waste at all, its fantastic! That was the most annoying thing about af, having to find somewhere to get rid of nasty stuff, also I guess I won't get to work and realise I've forgotten my tampons either will I? Fabulous!

I lost mine while pg and BFing and just cut my new one's stem to where the old one was....turns out I have a bit more space . I am too stingy to get a new one again though so am getting used to it sitting very high up.

h20 · 14/02/2009 23:14

Forgive my ignorance - what is a mooncup?

frogs · 14/02/2009 23:20

This is a mooncup

Clement · 14/02/2009 23:24

can i aks something? ive had mine for a year or so now, and getting it out is still a messy horrid bloodbath. TMI ALERT but the blood kind of webs between the cup and me and i can't separate the two without it going all over the loo. it is so messy. what am i doing wrong?

h20 · 14/02/2009 23:42

Oh ok, thanks. Interesting.

Wonderstuff · 15/02/2009 14:05

CuddlyKelpie using pelvic floor really helped thanks, did cough earlier resulting in it moving a lot lower i guess pelvic floor exercises are in order!!

Mine sits higher than it says in the instructions, but I can't feel it and it does the job so I'm happy. I've tried to place it a bit lower, but somehow it gets hoovered in to higher realms.

I left about a cm of stem on, but I know I could manage if there wasn't a stem at all.

I don't get particularly messy fingers, I think most of that is down to practise.

Clement - I know what you mean about the "stringy" thing! I can't see a way around this, though I do arm myself with some loo paper to try and swipe the string away. Sorry! Perhaps someone else can come up with a solution to this problem.

giraffescantdancethetango · 15/02/2009 14:24

No solution but I also have that problem

Takver · 16/02/2009 17:23

Mine also sits higher up, is uncomfortable lower down.
I don't get messy when taking out - but I do rinse it more often than they say if I am bleeding heavily (maybe every 2-3 hrs on heaviest day) so it is never too full.

blogqueen · 12/03/2009 10:07

I love my Mooncup but it does take a bit of getting used to. I would say it took me about 3 months, probably about the same time as it takes to get used to tampons!
Has anyone tried any other cup? Just noticed that Feminine Wear now has 4 different ones. They only had the Mooncup when I bought mine.
I just wondered what the others were like?

Bumperlicioso · 12/03/2009 10:42

It does take some getting used to. Sometimes I have put it in, gone to sit down then had to go and readjust as it was so uncomfortable.

I do love it though! It is a bit messy at times, and a pain to use a work where you have separate toilets and sinks.

Does anyone else find theirs 'pops' sometimes while inside? Mine does, I seem to get air bubbles trapped inside!

Clement · 14/03/2009 00:32

...so i was emptying mine out the other night, late, bit drunk, no contact lenses, and it fell in the loo. and i couldn't get it out and it went round the bend and now it's lost. i'm not buying another one.

QueenEagle · 14/03/2009 00:39

Had mine for 2 years or so now and LOVE IT! It can be messy especially if quite full and I get the thing like stringy pizza cheese (oh god that really is a horrible thought) but i find that hovering over the loo is ok - I just empty it straight in and have a wedge of toilet roll ready in the other hand. You will get used to it and find it easier each time. I have to wear mine quite high but also find that as I am coming to the end of my period it tends to drop down and then feel more uncomfortable for some reason.
