My council doesn't collect food waste, and I have a small courtyard, not a garden - is there anything I can do with it?

We don't have a huge amount of food waste, but we do have all the usual peelings etc.

The council will supply a food digester/compost bin thing (I have no idea what it is, if i'm being honest), but it has to be dug into the ground, and we only have a courtyard. It's a reasonable size, but there's no space in the miniscule bed to dig the thing in.

Is there anything I can do with the food waste, or do I just have to accept that it has to go out with normal waste?

What about putting it in a wormery? They are really small - like a bucket/

I had one of those bokashi composters which you can put cooked food waste in along with special 'bran'. The bin was small with a tap and allegedly designed for kitchen but afraid i wouldn't have put up with it in mine. You could drain liquid off as plant food. Once waste has rotted for a month you are meant to bury it but instructions did say it was ok to do this in a normal compost bin as long as completely covered. Mine was supplied free by local council but suppose it depends if you have room for normal composter too.

What does the council do with food waste anyway?

No idea! I assumed they take it to a commercial composting site, there are some round us, but they don't take domestic food waste.

A wormery! I hadn't even considered such a thing! And I will look at the bokashi thing too. I know nothing about either, but will do some googling today.

Am scared of worms though (please try to control your laughing - it has severely limited any gardening I try to do!)... Do I have to touch them?
