It is just that grey clogged up dust.

Dont think so incase of any germs picked up.

If was just hair, would be fine.

girlywhirly · 12/08/2008 14:01

Yes, you can, but it might be worth checking there are no tiny bits of lego or other non-degradable bits! After all, compost is made up of loads of things that are full of microbes. You can put in pet hairs, too.

Right can I have a third deciding opinion.

I do.

terramum · 12/08/2008 21:50

I don't think it's a good idea if you have carpets (& therefore carpet fluff in your hoover) as carpets aren't recommended for use anymore as a mulch or as a cover for compost heaps due to the chemicals used in them.

link here

Washersaurus · 12/08/2008 22:15

I thought it was fine if you have wool carpets

twinsetandpearls · 12/08/2008 22:51

Thanks for the link. I will put it in the bin then. What about the fluff in the tumble dryer.

Wool carpets are treated with chemicals just like the artificial fibre ones

girlywhirly · 13/08/2008 08:42

Depends what you use the compost for, then. If only for flower beds should be OK, but not for use on fruit/veg beds.

BigBadMousey · 13/08/2008 09:29

If your carpets are 100% natural fibres then you could compost for flower bed use - anything manmade will not compost of course

No idea about tumble drier fluff....

Washersaurus · 13/08/2008 10:41

I read somewhere that tumble drier fluff was fine as long as not manmade fibres - but then maybe that doesn't take into account chemical treatments on the fabric either?

TheProvincialLady · 13/08/2008 10:44

Tumble drier fluff would be full of man made fibres or at least concentrated chemicals from the washing powder/fabric conditioner etc. I wouldn't use it.

Of course if you only have organic hemp clothing and use soapnuts it would be fine, except that I can't see such a person using a tumble drier

Washersaurus · 13/08/2008 11:19

But you can take this too far can't you; there are chemicals in paper and cardboard too and we don't give a second thought about putting that in the compost bin. I have put tumble drier fluff in the compost bin, admittedly mostly the fluff from my cotton nappies when I have to tumble dry them (no softener and barely any detergent used)

cremolafoam · 13/08/2008 11:21

I do and it is mostly cat hair

twinsetandpearls · 13/08/2008 12:27

Probably not provinciallady.
