Halogen lights - an alternative?

We live in rented accommodation and our kitchen and bathroom have these halogen light fittings. They are both internal rooms with no windows so lights are unavoidable.

I'm sure they aren't very environmentally friendly, but more to the point the burn out really quickly and are costing us a fortune to replace (and probably in leccy too). What can we do?

LED lights are becoming more available and are bright, so suitable for where you'd have halogen ones, but I think you'd probably have to change the fittings. Halogens are just ghastly for constantly burning out, aren't they?

We can change the fittings easily as it's not our house. It's a real PITA!

We have small energy saving GU10 fitting lamps (Megaman 11W ones). TBH they give a miserable greenish light and take ages to warm up. They cost about £10 each too. Probably better to keep with the halogens and turn them off as much as possible.

It gets on my nerves, that all you can buy as spotlights are halogens and there is no decent alternative.

I think cheap halogens burn out quicker than better branded ones, but may be wrong on that.
