Do you use the little plastic bags in the fruit and veg section of the supermarket?

Or is there a sensible reusable option? I always take my big reusable bags for the checkout, but use about 12 plastic bags to get fruit and veg. What could I use instead? Has to be transparent, and strong enough not to be ruined by the first courgette it houses.

I don't put them in bags at all, just straight in the trolley. Unless it's small items like mushrooms or tomatoes.

posieparker · 08/06/2008 20:33

I go to my local greengrocers and never use plastic!!

Chloe55 · 08/06/2008 20:33

I do use them but then I reuse them to pick up my dog's poo when we go out walking so I try to make themost out of them iyswim

BettySpaghetti · 08/06/2008 20:35

Do you have a local fruit and veg shop you could go to instead of the supermarket?

We use a local shop where you select produce yourself and have a choice of either paper bags (which are obviously recyclable) or plastic bags

RambleOn · 08/06/2008 20:35

I get as many as possible, and use them as nappy bags.

avenanap · 08/06/2008 20:36

I don't bother either unless they are small, titchy items (grapes etc). I try to take them back to reuse. I also request that the cashier doesn't use them for chicken etc. If you put all the meat together you shouldn't need a bag. It does piss some of them off when I put a load of loose vegies on the checkout though.

bran · 08/06/2008 20:37

Onya bags do a set of 5 resuable veg bags.

I usually just put stuff loose in the trolly except small stuff, like GtheG. I did wish I'd used a bag for some organic brocolli last week though, as it was home to several earwigs who wandered all over the fridge.

GordontheGopher · 08/06/2008 20:40

Eeewwwww bran!

Nagapie · 08/06/2008 20:43

I never use the bags offered, but usually the busybody checkout women put my veggies into plastic with very meaningful looks at me and mumbles of making their job more difficult....

Umlellala · 08/06/2008 20:46

no bags if at all possible - check out people very nice at local Morrisons! But I keep several clear plastic bags* in the bottom of my reusable bags and reuse again and again (rather than get a new one each time)

*saved from when online delivery deliver seemingly every item in a separate bag

sparklysparkles · 08/06/2008 21:04

We have to weigh the stuff ourselves where I live, and have to close the bag to prove no cheating has gone on, so can't just chuck in the trolley.

Onya is exactly what I'm looking for - thanks bran.

Nope, I go to the market and get my fruit and veg and it all comes in nice brown paper bags, they even give dd her own small bag of grapes, so I don't even have to enter the grape stealing debate.

bettythebuilder · 08/06/2008 21:11

I use the little plastic bags when needed, but then keep them and put my hand in them (like a glove) when I'm chopping chillies (prevents chilli/eye-rub/contact lens/trauma)

Sputnik · 08/06/2008 21:12

I reuse them as freezer bags, sandwich bags or, if we're out and have to dispose of a disposable, nappy bags.

MuffinMclay · 08/06/2008 21:18

No, just put straight into the trolley.

BlueDragonfly · 08/06/2008 21:20

i take back the ones that i used last time (or the time before that.....) and reuse them until they fall apart

fairywing · 09/06/2008 16:41

i use th onya bags too they are great, despite the odd looks at the checkout sometimes

dylsmum1998 · 09/06/2008 19:44

i just put everything straight in the trolley the only exception is when i bought some fresh peas the other day, i use the local markets etc too and ask that they dont put things in bags (our market you say what you want and they get it)
the cashiers look at me odd sometimes but i just say i dont like using plastic and the fruit is perfectly fine without it

baiyu · 09/06/2008 20:47

I use Onya bags too, great for storing food in the fridge too, no more sweaty vegetables!

PigeonPie · 09/06/2008 21:53

I nearly bought the Onya bags but decided to try the Lakeland Weigh and Store alternative first as they were a third of the price and we've just got a new Lakeland open near us so I didn't have to pay postage.

The bloke in the butchers (they sell local veg too!) did look a bit when I used them for the first time today though. Think they're great and if it stops me having to have plastic bags then so much the better.

Twinklemegan · 09/06/2008 21:59

I use brown paper bags at my local farm shop. At the supermarket I usually leave things loose (the cashiers hate it). Occasionally I do use the plastic bags if I'm buying a lot of something, but then I reuse them for cat poo.

spamm · 09/06/2008 22:03

I try not to use them and just put the stuff straight into the trolley.

But the young lad at the supermarket yesterday now thinks I am strange (or very very strange), because he asked if he should put the garlic in a small bag, and I said: "No, it might get lonely".

No idea where that came from, but not sure I can go back for at least six months.

dylsmum1998 · 09/06/2008 22:06

grin @spamm lol

lljkk · 11/06/2008 22:05

Shake out cereal and bread bags and reuse,
Find the random loose bags left by other shoppers in the peppers/brocoli etc. (I'm not sure what the staff do with these, otherwise!)
Ditto, little odd bags left in trolleys by other shoppers,
Reuse Tortilla bags, magazine wrappers, etc....

giraffescantdance · 01/07/2008 03:52

spamm oh do go back, and start talking to your tomatoes next time too eg whisper "just popping you in my rucksak, ok darlings?"

muchos fun

I never use them, they dont serve much purpose imo. Fruit still gets bashed about unless your careful and it takes 2 seconds more for the cashier to lift them up. I HATE it when they try and put icecream/yoghurt in a plastic bag without asking! Im standing filling my rucksak and turn round and they are thrusting bags at me, NOOOOOO. I always refuse for caards as well, just pop them in the small bit of my bag.

I know they are trained to do it and it counts as an "offer help" task so if they were getting assesed then they would get a tick for that. (say hello, offer help, say goodbye motto) But Id like them to ASK not assume I want one and start to put it in.

sorry rant over.
