It must be safe. Our council has recently extended the things it will take for recycling and now includes aerosols - they go in with the empty tins.

Ours take them, but say they have to be empty. But I know you aren't meant to pierce the tims even when they're empty, so I don't know why it's ok [puzzled emoticon]

Basically an aerosol can shattering in the safety of a high-pressure squashing vessel in a recycling plant isn't a problem - it's all contained.

If you've got small kids who are fascinated by diggers, conveyor belts and big machinery, a trip round a recycling centre is a great day out. Lots of them have visitors centres to explain what they do. There's a big waste convention in Torbay each summer and all the local kids are enchanted with all the machinery and types of bin!

The aerosol usual go in a separate non-compression section of the collection truck.

It is safer for them to be collected this way than to be put in normal waste.

I worked for a waste company many moons ago and took the kids on tours. Great fun
