Wardrobe, no MDF, HELP please

Have moved to a property with no wardrobes; just been using the moving boxes over the last month.Rental property and so fitted wardrobes is not an option.Don't want second hand; so, antique etc, not an option.

I have spent 3 weeks now doing online shopping for solid wood wardrobes, with no MDF, that won't cost a fortune. Found a few pine wardrobe sellers in Ebay who claim it's all made in UK. However, not too sure about how good these are.

I need 3 wardrobes. 2 of these will be 2m and the other 1.5 m wide. How much should I expect to pay for these?

I often hear here on MN to look for a "local cabinet maker", "local carpenter". Any tips on how to find these local people, when you move to a new area?

TIA

Is there a specific reason for not wanting mdf?https://www.argos.co.uk/product/3375749 is wood, or https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-wilton-2-door-wardrobe/natural/p3901693 is more expensive and ok (I've got one). Both of these self assembly, it all depends on how much you want to spend, hundreds or thousands and how long you need them to last. Furniture Village do some decent/expensive ones. I certainly would not buy off ebay, the chances of it being what you ordered are minimal, if something is missing/broken on arrival customer service will be rubbish. TBH unless it was a forever home I'd go to IKEA and ask on your local Facebook page for recommendations of a chippy, who could assemble if you don't fancy it and modify to fit round skirting boards, pipes or reduce the width/height to make them fit.

Yes just get pine wardrobes on eBay or FB marketplace or buy IKEA. Sounds like you're over complicating things tbh. If you can't spend out on a solid wood wardrobe then getting a carpenter to make one isn't going to be any cheaper. Not sure why you've ruled out MDF.

Formaldehyde. That's the reason for ruling out MDF. And it's quite energy intensive to produce.

Why no second hand/antique?

Lovemybunnies · 25/02/2026 20:04

OP did you find any? I am giving up on my daughter’s Pax wardrobe as it keeps falling apart.

Can I ask you why you say "Don't want second hand; so, antique etc, not an option." please?

AgnesX · 25/02/2026 20:23

Does it have to be new? Auctioneers might be an option?

PS sorry just reread the bit about 2nd hand

Ritaskitchen · 25/02/2026 20:49

If you want solid wood it will need to be hand built and won’t be flat pack. So that is why it is more expensive. So maybe just adjust your expectations?
You other option could be auctions of liquidated furniture shops or ex display models.
Or fabric wardrobes? They are cheaper
