Oooh, how do you do it then? didn't know I could make my own. V clever.

OverMyDeadBody · 21/05/2008 10:02

That sounds fab!

How did you make them? There have been a number of different 'recipes' on here lately.

eenybeeny · 21/05/2008 10:02

what did you do? explain!

funnypeculiar · 21/05/2008 10:04

come on, more info woman

blinkingthreetimes · 21/05/2008 10:05

I bough a load of cheap flannels they were 20p each you cut them in half .
Then in a tupperwear box add some cammomile tea a capful of olive oil and a squirt of baby bath shake and add flannels ,it does help to tip box upside down fo a while so all the flannels get wet iyswim?

They are really good and reusable

belgo · 21/05/2008 10:06

what if they get really pooey?

belgo · 21/05/2008 10:07

I mean, do you need to soak them before washing them?

mistypeaks · 21/05/2008 10:09

They sound really good. Especially the camomile tea part.

blinkingthreetimes · 21/05/2008 10:09

The only really pooey one I had I did throw away but it did get all the poo off and dd dose not have a sore bum anymore .

I thought they would dry up TBH but they feel just like wipes ,

I do soak mine I have a little bucket in the bathroom to leave them in with a bit of disinfectent .

funnypeculiar · 21/05/2008 10:12

hummm, but exactly what do you do with the slightly yuchy but not foul ones? Do you need a nappy bucket to soak?

MrsBadger · 21/05/2008 10:14

even really pooey ones go in the wash here - but if it's that bad I use a bit of loo roll first and flush it so the flannel never takes the brunt of it.

though tbh I didn't bother cutting the flannels, or soaking them - I just stole the stack of old 70s patterned flannels from my mum's airing cupboard and wet them with water to use them.

MrsBadger · 21/05/2008 10:14

yes nappy bucket for dirty ones
but no need to soak them

cheesesarnie · 21/05/2008 10:15

we do them but without the baby bath.and i cut up an old fleece blanket.if theyre pooey i soak them if not straight in wash.we used them as ds was in reusable nappies but now hes potty trained but they are nicer.

northender · 21/05/2008 10:18

Fleece is also good for wipes, especially if you want a slightly softer wipe. I just cut up some oddments we had, no sewing involved and used a similar mix to the op (chamomile tea, baby oil and a few drops of lavender oil). Well done btt you won't regret it! It saved us a fortune.

Innat · 21/05/2008 11:27

I made some wipes when dd was born 9 mo ago and jus the other week my dh said "i really think these wipes are the best thing you've ever made - i just thought i should say because i don't usually tell you when i think things are good!". we use the same solution as northender with a bit of baby soap too, except i use veg oil (derived from veg instead of baby oil derived from crude oil).

I made mine by sewing a terry towel onto a piece of fleece (cheap blanket from ikea) and then using a zigag stitch divided it up into little squares and then cut them up. They fit inside a little clippy plastic box where i store them in solution - perfect for out and about too.

If they are really pooey i just shake them around in the water at the bottom of the toilet to get most of it off. I then put them in a mesh bag in the (dry) bucket where i store dirty nappies. A word of advice - i wash the wipes with the mesh bag closed. my friend once had her whole washing machine jammed by a washable breast pad and i figured these might have the same problem.

well done btt - i hope you get lots of use from them!

chloemegjess · 23/05/2008 22:13

Just to say, we use washable wipes. You dont need to buy anything, I just went round the house and found anything that I didnt want - old fleece jumper, flannels, towel, etc.

Poundland do "baby wash cloths" a pack of about 8 for £1 which are really nice (we bought to use as wipes, but my DD decided she liked them as a comforter!!) They are the perfect size, look nice, etc.

Also, you dont need to soak, we just put them in the wash with the nappies. We use a nappy sanitizer in the wash though - but thats not essential.

I keep even the really dirty ones. Once they have gone through the wash, they are fine, After all, your only going to use them to wipe more poo!

tigermeow · 23/05/2008 22:27

I never used a single wipe on DD. I just used to hang her under the mixer tap and wash her down! We were living abroad then so it was easy when out and about to do this...and copy the other mothers!
I'd dry her off, put a new nappy on and hey presto...done!
She was a cloth bummed one and never ever had nappy rash.
Well done on making your own....a little tupperwrae box is great for storing the reusable wipes for when you are out and about and need a baby wipe. A good nappy bag too to sling the wipes in!

Alishanty · 24/05/2008 14:21

I use a combination of 'multi-purpose' cloths from Wilko's cut up, fleece squares and flannels, they go in a square tupperware and I moisten them with some water and a couple of drops of lavender oil. They get washed wit teh nappies and dry really quick. Dp loves them and doesn't mind using them. He likes the fact they save us money and do not contain chemicals like 'normal' wipes. My friends have been impressed with them too.

jellyforbrains · 26/05/2008 17:26

I use a wet wipes box (an old tushies one that has a removeable lid) and then cut up squares of terry to 'wipe size' and zigzagged the edge on the sewing machine.

I just make up a water solution as with a top and tail bowl. Boil kettle, give tub a rinse with a bit of boiling water, put wipes in tub (a day or 2s worth), and then pour boiling water over.

I keep a loo roll next to the changing area and use a piece of that if clean up job is v pooey, but the poo bits come off the wipes in the wash anyway.

When I go out I just take dry ones and run them under a tap. Have emergency wet wipes for when I have to do a change and there is no tap, but I find them hopeless compared to washable ones.
