Where do you buy your clothes?

DH and I try and 'do the right thing' eco wise, and want to make more changes.

We have one 'ethical' clothes shop in our nearest town that I do pop into every now and then. It sells nice, trendy things, but the range is not wide enough for me to want to buy all of our clothes there.

Is there a good online retailer, or do you just have to shop around?

I get the kids clothes from places like green baby (usually when they have their sale though), but the adult choices I have found on the net are not always so good. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places!

Not so into the 'hippy' look myself, though I know that a lot of these companies are appealing to the mass market now. Am under 30 so want to look my age (though pg at the moment so not dressed my best!), but don't actually want to be buying in topshop! My mates are all in the 'lets buy loads of cheap bits in primark and only wear them once mindset' so can't ask anyone here for advice.

Buy vintage/ 2nd hand /ebay or from charity shops in upmarket areas.

JackieNo · 05/05/2008 20:39

You could try Adili and Gossypium. I've seen people on here recommending People Tree too.

JackieNo · 05/05/2008 20:41

Howies for casual stuff.

Same here riven (plus a jumper in winter )

ranting · 05/05/2008 20:48

Charity shop for me and ds too (he's an emo so he can live with the second hand look). It has been out of necessity but I am going back to work and I now have the charity shop bug, so will not go back to the high street.
Charity shopping takes a fair bit of effort to make it work, you have to go in often to bag good stuff, but he feeling you get when you do is quite amazing. I had a really lovely Betty Jackson petrol blue dress out of the Scope one.

Lauriefairycake · 05/05/2008 20:49

the biggest problem is buying lots of clothes so try and make do with less. French women have much fewer clothes but very high quality (although the younger frenchwomen are now going as high street as we are)

I buy vintage and as little as possible. I have lots of shoes and jewellery which I buy on ebay.

Eden has lovely clothes - think it's Bono's wife who designs them. Online too.

The biggest difference we can all make is buying less of everything

jellyforbrains · 06/05/2008 08:13

Yes, I definitely am not into buying loads, so the less clothes, better quality route is the one I prefer. Will have to find a good vintage shop. I do visit the charity shops but usually to get toys for the children (have found loads of unused/boxed toys there), I am just put off by having to rifle through loads of clothes to find one nice thing. Shall try harder!

i find it hard to find clothes that fit in charity shops so is mostly ebay or clothes my sisters no longer want!they dont have children so spend all there wages on clothes, get bored after a bit and give them to me!only thing is,is that 2 of them are a size bigger so i make do with being a bit baggy!

Highlander · 09/05/2008 15:10

can I brag about my new jeans? Exactly the style and colour I've been looking for for over a year - 4 blardy quid from the cancer shop !

soooooooooo farkin chufty

expatinscotland · 09/05/2008 15:12

I don't.

I get all of them from the US. My mum buys them for me.

I get basics for the DDs - socks, vests, petticoats - and that's about it, from Matalan or Primark.

Everything else is given to them by their grandparents or my sister.

Highlander · 09/05/2008 15:25

ooh, howies looks v nice.

Highlander · 09/05/2008 15:27

expat - do you know sex of baby?

have a ton of boy stuff and friends disappointingly keep producing girls

expatinscotland · 09/05/2008 15:33

Highlander, am counting down the days till the abnormality scan, where they will tell us the sex if they can see it !

13 June.

We really, really would like to know. I'm going to ask for open legs tips when the time draws near .

Thanks for the offer.

I'll be posting on here as soon as we know.

Sure you're not wanting a third wee one?

Highlander · 09/05/2008 15:35

fark off - sticking with 2!!!!!!!!

will put your scan date on the calender and shout for you again. Good Luck!

expatinscotland · 09/05/2008 15:37

aw, c'mon, i can't think of anything more fun than the newborn stage .

thanks muchly.

Highlander · 09/05/2008 15:42

true, wee babies are utterly cute. i remember having DS2 for 3 hours in the recovery area all to myself, just naked, BFing. DH and I used to scrap in the evenings about whose turn it was to hold him. Totally unlike the panicky, overwhelmed PFBs we were with DS1!

expatinscotland · 09/05/2008 15:45

i remember having DD2 in bed with me her first night.

and the way DD1 slept with her wee fists curled up by her head.

awwww.

crimplene · 09/05/2008 17:11

I like etsy. It can take a while to find something nice on there, but I have a few things I always get compliments on. Plus the local charity shops.

I was going to suggest Nomads but they are very hippyish - my Year 9 class are really into their Fair Trade stuff after watching the BBC3 programme 'Blood, Sweat and T-shirts'

They also like this website Ethics Girls.

it's sooo hard not to be tempted by the £1.50 t-shirts in primark though......

Lucycat · 09/05/2008 17:21

Seasaltare pretty ethical too if you want the surfer type of stuff.
