Plastic bag questions

ditavonteesed · 28/04/2008 12:55

Ok, I do everything I can to be green but I am really struggling with the plastic bag issue.
OK so if I don't use supermarket bags (whi9ch I don't) I then have to buy bags for my bin, none of the supermarkets I use sell biodegradable ones and i do not have a lot of money to spend on bin nags.
Anyway I live in Sheffield and all our waste is incinerated anyway so does anyone have the magic answer to this problem as it is elluding me completly.

am pretty sure that some of the supermarket ones are biodegradable? maybe tesco ones?

Dragonbutter · 28/04/2008 12:57

could you buy biodegradable bin bags online?

Dragonbutter · 28/04/2008 12:59

try here

If the waste is incinerated, it would be pointless to spend your sparse cash on biodegradable bin bags. Reuse/recycle/compost as much as you can, minimise what you throw away - those are much more valuable principles to follow than buying biodegradable bin bags

Co-op are biodegradable.

Re bins I use a bin liner for the kitchen bin, you can of course buy biodegradable ones if you wish. With the other bins (which are rarely used) I only replace the liners it absolutely necessary. I know some people put all kind of food waste etc in the nearest bin, but most of our waste goes straight into the relevant kitchen container.

We have a system - waste paper into container in kitchen. Fruit/veg waste and other compostable stuff into compost container. Rarely use disposable nappies so have only used about 2 nappy sacks with dd2. I save all kinds of bags (outers from multipack crisps for example that would otherwise be chucked). Oh and using a mooncup eliminates most personal bathroom type waste.

I would suggest having a think about how many bins you really need complete with a fresh bin liner every time. We have 3 floors but only 1 bin on each floor, like any change you get used to it.

Our waste is incinerated but afaik this is not the environmentally perfect solution the Council try to say it is - it creates fumes and ash.

I know what you mean, it goes a bit against the grain to buy bin bags when you can be given something similar for 'free'.
I find that even though I try really hard not to get plastic bags, a few do creep in (friends bring stuff round in them, DH doesn't remember to take a bag, lodger likewise) and we use those as bin bags.
The only bin we have a liner in is the kitchen one - other bins shouldn't get 'squishy' waste in them.
If your waste gets incinerated I think it's worse than pointless to get degradable bags - they take more energy to make!
How about a pragmatic solution: get one or two supermarket bags a week, and they can be your bin bags.

littlefrog I get really frustrated when visitors (are you listening mum?!) bring loads of bags round with one or 2 items in each. Stop it, I hate all those bags in my cupboards.

Yes and keep squishy waste in the kitchen bin.

We only have a liner in the kitchen bin although it does get emptiede every day. i also have to clean the cats litter tray out about 3 times a day.

Could you wrap the cat litter up in large sheets of newspaper rather than bags - make it into a kind of parcel (only if you have newspapers or local friend/neighbour can pass them on?

We have our wheelie bin cleaned once a month so anything that leaks inside or wasn't in a liner soon gets rinsed out.

ditavonteesed · 28/04/2008 16:51

Don't have newspaper I hate the stuff. seems a bit pointless again to buy just for disposing of.
i know there is an answer I just have to find it.
