Car Club - anyone a member can give me advice?

Our knackered VW Golf broke down last week and is going to cost about £550 to fix (it's about 16 years old I think).

DH and I are in talks about whether to fix it and risk more expensive repairs down the line (we really have no money), or to join the City Car Club scheme.

We live in a major city, a 20 minute walk to the centre, both walk to work, both have bikes, live 2 minutes from a high street with veg shop, aldi, deli, newsagents etc.

I'm thinking we'd do any major shops with a supermarket delivery, would use the car club to visit family and friends, and I think we'd end up saving a bit.

But it would be interesting to hear any tales, positive or negative, of your experiences with the car club. There are 4 cars in our area so I don't think there would be too much of a problem with availability.

DH is worried that we'd try it, then decide we need our own car, and have to buy someone else's clapped out car as our own would have been scrapped!

BIL joined one after getting rid of his car. Thinks it's great - much less stress than having his own car. But he's single, no children etc. He drives us around in the car club cars sometimes, and they seem good. Pricey, though, if you want them for a whole day.
We have no car, live in a similar situation to you, and don't (yet) belong to one, because we have never yet felt the need for it. We hire cars for whole weekends though, a few times a year (cost comparison: 3 days hire (ex petrol): £77; 1 day with car club: £55, plus mileage of 23p/mile after 30 miles). BIG plus of car club is none of that queuing...

where do you hire your cars from? i'm looking to hire one for a week in the summer but dont know where to start?

We hire from 1car1. Sometimes others come up cheaper, but they're close and convenient. Also, last time I hired from Easycar (turned out to be National - easycar is a consolidator) they charged us £90 for a tiny scuff on a hubcap! 1car1 has much more battered cars, which I find much more relaxing! And they'll deliver the car to you if you're hiring for more than 5 days.
