pongy food recycling bins - what can I do?

hello

our local council collects food waste for compost, which is a great idea, but it makes for a pongy pair of bins (small one for use in the kitchen and then transferred to the big one outside the front door)

I find the small one especially really nasty to have in the kitchen, even with biodegradable bags etc with them. I would really prefer to do without the bags, as it seems to defeat the object a bit (esp now as biodegradable ones are apparently not ecologically sound)

Can anyone recommend a good way of keeping on top of the messiness - or particularly, an easy to clean, good fitting-lidded bin or caddy?

thanks

I think lakeland do one with a filter

Yes I have a ceramic crock from lakeland that has a charcoal filter in the lid, works a treat. I think they do a plastic caddy to.

I have a small one so that it gets emptied often, and wash it a lot!

I have the smaller green plastic one with the filter that lakeland used to do (got it cheap at the charity shop at our local dump ) & have had no problems with smells at all...in fact I stopped composting for a while & completely forgot about it, even though it had semi composted waste in it LOL
