Why do we try to be green?

I am struggling with the concept

? to ?save the planet? not quite sure what from ? global warming? Surviving after the oil runs out? The next ice age? Over-population (well I only had one),
? reduce waste?
? use less energy and resources?
? to set a good example for my daughter and the children I care for?

Are there any more reasons?

It is quite important

I just want my children to be able to grow up and have happy lives and maybe children of their own one day. It worries me that this may not happen because of global warming or the oil running out. Or war as a result of everyone fighting over the Earths diminishing resources.
Now I'm depressed.

Because I hate the throw away society we have become, because in order to change that mindset you have to start by changing yourself.

Yes it is to do with being less wasteful, and so using fewer resources, and so impacting (if we were all to do it) climate change.

Fossil fuels are going to run out one day. Nuclear cannot be the only way forwards, even without the question of what to do with the waste apart from dump it in the sea and ship it to poorer countries the uranium stores will also run out one day. We need to find a sustainable alternative.

I would love to run away to a remote part of the country with a few pigs and sheep and grow veggies and have a turbine and a water mill but since I can't quite finance that right now I can stop using plastic bags, recycle more, use less, shop locally for local produce (which both supports local industry against the swelling tide of mass producers and reduces emissions created by transporting food), turn the (energy efficient) lights out and take a good look at my shopping habits with regards to electric goods and clothes etc. (though clothes is more to do with ethical than green).

as riven said, because there are a finite amount of resourses that everyone has to share, so overconsumption and waste is just greedy and wrong.

One of the reasons I'm green is because of my faith - as a christian i believe God made this beautiful wonderful earth for us, but has asked us to look after it for each other and our children.

And most of the reasons already stated too!

southeastastra · 26/04/2008 22:33

it's just a ploy to make you worry about something

RubberDuck · 26/04/2008 22:34

Because I don't like to be wasteful.

Hmm

Landfill space is fast running out.

Climate change happens - it's part of the earth's natural cycles but, apparently, we are hastening a natural change by our over consumption and spewing stuff back out into the atmosphere. I wonder about this because carbon is such a tiny, tiny proportion of the earth's atmosphere but hey ho, the science says it's true. Least ways, government funded science says it's true.

My main green efforts are reducing waste/recyling, to avoid more and more landfil sites and organic meat & dairy - which also means eating less meat as its sooo expensive. I do it becasue I hate the drugs and hormones used in "conventional " farming. BTW PMT has been much better since the switch to organic dairy.

Also try to do some organic veg and cereals because of the benefits to wildlife.

For me it's about one thing - trying to ameliorate man's contribution to climate change.

As a result of global warming millions of people will die. The scientific evidence is unequivocal.

Our governments' are not doing enough to prevent it and we need to show the way at grass roots level. I really believe that as individuals acting with a common goal we can make a difference.

My mother was green way before it became the trendy thing to do. And I hope my own children will also pick up on my values.
